Hunter 380 Herrington Harbour North
I've had a survey performed on my H380 that I'm selling and the surveyor stated that the entire rudder sounded dead when he was percussion sounding it with a hammer (I was not within him when he sounded the rudder). I seem to recall a few years ago that there was a topic on here regarding the rudders on some Hunters and how they would not give the typical sound (sharper crack) when tapped and that it was not due to delamination of the fiberglass. Does anyone have recollection of this or am I completely out in left field? For what it's worth, there's no visual indication of cracking or water intrusion on the rudder. Thanks in advance for any inputs you can provide.

Some considerations; if the rudder is full of water, that might affect the percussion sound. Drilling a small hole at the bottom should drain it and then replace with a small wad of sealant. Whether the 380 rudder is hollow or foam, no thought here. Perhaps Marlow Hunter Customer Service can confirm. Other 380 owners might chime in as well. Did your surveyor offer an opinion as to whether there is a problem with the rudder's construction, other than it sounded dead?

The rudder on our 1991 P42 remains in good condition, with no indications of de-lamination, as far as I can tell. Whether the surveyor in your case has found something to be concerned about, no thought here either. It might be worthwhile to obtain a second opinion. Usually, the buyer pays for the survey as a condition of the sale.
