I have a Yanmar 3YM30 engine in my 5 yr old Hunter 33.

I didn't really pay attention when it was new, but I now realize that the engine was painted a gray color. I notice it now because the paint is flaking off the flexible parts - the rubber tubing etc. It's actually creating quite a mess. Is this normal? I'm wondering if the engine was actually an older one (a used one) that had been prettied up to appear new. I'm thinking this in part because the serial number appears to make it quite old (E04448) for a boat that is only 5 years old. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

That's Exactly What Happens .....................

................... pretty well for the life of the engine. My 2GM20F is now thirteen years old and the grey paint is STILL flaking off the hoses and other flexible parts. Makes a bit of a mess but I just vacuum it up at every spring cleaning.

The 3YM series is one of Yanmar's newer designs - that's probably why you have a low SN.

I have a 2005 Hunter 33, It was also painted gray. there is some flaking of the paint from the flexible tubing, but not much. I'm not down at the marina so I can't give you a serial #.

Normal

Like already mentioned the #YM is the newer model Yanmar and no way you got a older used engine.

Sounds normal, Syoun. The serial number is lower than ya might expect because that is a European assembled engine. The only problem with that here in the US is that some ancilliary parts are slightly different.. I don't remember which ones, but ya have to make it a point to tell any service or parts guys that it is an "E" engine.
ENJOY.. My 27 year old gray Yanmar sometimes still flakes paint off the hoses ..

They painted the engine AFTER they assembled it? As in hoses and everything? Belts too?

Ours was way too old when we bought it, it was on at least its second, maybe third set of hoses and belts, so there's no paint on them.

Perfectly normal, but a PITA. I too get flakes constantly in the oil drip pan. My 05 3YM30 is around that same serial no., so is nothing unusual either.

BTW, did you get your overheating problem solved?

Must not be making paint like the used to. My Yanmar is from 1985 and the paint is still where it should be. Everything is still pointed grey. We have owned the boat for 7 years and I have never seen a chip of paint anywhere. :D

Responding to Scott about overheating problem -- NO.

More details on that thread.

Thanks for all your responses here - very useful (at least I know the paint is normal). I had suspected it because of the overheating problem & whether it was a symptom of my being taken for a ride!

best
