PHIL HERRING-ARE YOU THERE?

As the poster of the original article, I would respectfully request that you delete the entire thread that I (unfortunately) started, as the subject has now been beaten to death. I promise to never bring the subject up again. I should have known better than to bring-up this particular subject in a venue such as this. It would have been much more appropriate at the NRA website. To those of you who posted credible info regarding my original posting, my sincere thanks. My humble apologies, Jeff M. OK, any statistics on the number of fishermen

raping wives? And the number of those rapes prevented with a gun. And what about the old adage that says 'when rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it'. Be sure and check with your wife before pulling the trigger. ;D Seriously, I think preventing sex crimes including molestation on a boat with a gun, is a bit of a stretch, don't you think, just a little bit?

Crimes do occur. Years ago 5 co-eds were raped on the applachian trail by some "hunters" At the lake just south of San Antonio a woman was found with her throat cut. She had been fishing with her husband and he let her out on shore. She was supposed to walk back to the car. The university of TN had a real problem with rapist on their jogging/bike trail so much so that a friend who was a graduate student there stopped riding her bike. The girl who was dating the congressman from CA found murdered along a jogging trail. Every day women are murdered and raped what makes you think it couldn't happen on a boat???

You have my vote too. With all due respect to the majority of the contributors, this thread is slowly starting to look like a prime candidate for the waste bin. I know it is entirely Phil's call, of course, and that Phil hates to play the role of regulator unless it is really unavoidable. However, in the long run, many privately operated bulletin boards have had to restrict certain topics (guns, abortion, gay rights, religion, you name it) that invariably deteriorate, generate animosity and do take up an inordinate amount of space and time on everyone's computer screen. It will be usefull in the archives when anyone ever brings up the subject again, we can just tell them "Go to the archives...its been beaten to death already"..;-) Maybe he can just close it out with no new submissions. ps...also, all in all, I think there some pretty good discussion here from all points of view which I think is good. If you went to an NRA site, I fear the discussion would be woefully lopsided and a well rounded understanding of the issues would not be presented. I'm not for or against, on this issue. I just like knowing all the options available with all the caveats and problems that they might involve. And in this case some of the issues are HUGE and not to be taken lightly

I have to agree with Jeff... this is turning in a circular discussion that beyond the scope of the web site. I'm going to leave this thread up -- if I can -- but let's just let it fade into history, shall we? It will be archived in due course. However, if this drags on I will be forced to delete it. Thanks for your cooperation... this thread was more civil than usual, for the topic.

Back to Self Defense Metods ...

What about looking at other more inovative methods besides guns to improve self defense? For example, using an Inverter. Using the on-board inverter connected to various items on deck to create an electrical "fence" of sorts could be a good deterent. Just think, no need to register with Customs and Immigration. Assuming the case where the boat owners are on board and the assailants arrive from the water (is this the main concern?), then maybe a system could be set up with hot and grounded objects such that when an intruder "closes the circuit" they get their just dues. Items that would be connected to the circuit could be items like life lines, aluminum toe rails (for those boats that still have them), stays, pulpit, pushpit, and similar type items. I'm thinking of circuits connected to the onboard inverter with probably a master AC switch, similar to the master DC switch. Getting the hot and grounded circuits would be the main trick but with some ingenuity I think this could be done. Since lifelines are insulated a second wire could be run parallel to the life line. For the barefoot variety a properly connected chicken wire in the cockpit would make a good welcome mat. Even items like the dinghy could be wired to prevent theft. P.S. Jeff "P": What's this? discussion is good

especially with differing points of view. No fun discussing gun ownership at the NRA. But honestly I think that most of the time most places most people are friendly and mean you no harm. Discussion is good it expands our understanding of other people. As a future cruiser a big part of the lifestyle is meeting and learning about other people.

You are taking a the rational approach that I do... discretion IS the better part of valor, but still maintaining some personal safety... at least at home, in the US, especially where you LIVE on a boat... you have the right to maintain firearms at home. Steve

Answer to your question ED?

We have no clear way to know this, but IMO, a flare gun, clearly at hand and READY to be used, would have also done the trick. Steve

Thank you for diverting the conversation back to what it was originally intended... what to do for safety against potential attack on a boat, instead of WHAT gun we should carry to avoid trouble. However, your idea of an electrical booby trap... at least here in the states, will get you ONE LARGE LAWSUIT. It is illegal on land to rig booby traps.. even if they are posted (some people can't read), so what makes you think they would be legal on a boat. Of course, in a foreign country, where there is no law very near of any kind... I guess anything goes... Steve
