How old are you? You are just finding out about men? <g>
Steve, Haven't you been following this thread. Questions like that will get you squirted with vinegar!

Zee, all men are simple creatures. Give 'em pizza and beer, scratch 'em behind the ear and they'll be happy. Oh and a hammock to sleep in doesn't hurt either. :D

i like brians answer---lol--- wont ever grow any older , either!!! in spirit!! chronologically, i am old enough to have known 2 bad husbands and many interesting hobbies. LOL .. i like boats and car racing best.
i know all about men--they are just big boys--snips and snails and puppy dog tails..LOL....they NEVER grow up and love to play with toys. totally untrainable and can be fun to play with.\

men are more like cats than they think---lol--sometimes they miss the catbox....
think they are untrainable and resist change....
like to stay out late at nite thinking they will get lucky and make a lot of noise about it..
will eat anything out of a can....
(oops--i modified this one so i woudnt get mod'ed...) ;)

and some are reallly cute.......omg--i almost forgott he part that ties this alll into the original thread--LOL----- men love to lie around and shed on stuff they arent spozed to ...LOL..just like the kitties that need the training to stay away---

gooodluck--i hope th e retraining of the kats works and you are blessed with fur-freee zones for your sail covers.....advantage of the cats resting there is -- birds wont poop on your boat ...they dont like cat fur for some reason.....

LOL...

Birds specially don't like cat fur when it is wrapped around a cat that is pointy on five of her six ends.

two of them [kats] have taken to sleeping on top of mainsail cover and my sunbrella cover over my sliding hatch.
Toss a mothball (naphthalene) into the sail cover when you button it up and one under the hatch cover. The stink will keep out the cats and bugs (and the spiders that chase the bugs). A few minutes with the sail in the wind and the smell will be gone.

I've taken to putting a stocking full of mothballs in my boat when I'm not using it. The reduction in bug related problems has been remarkable (except for ants). And I have chickens in the yard. They used to get up on the boat and do what chickens do (Sh**)... but since the boat now has a mothball stink to it they stay off the boat entirely.

If you go over to the coat hanger section in WalMart you will find them. They are only a few dollars a box.

Might be easier than making a giant spitball gun or hissing like a cat while you chase the cats around with a spray bottle.... (but not as fun  ) just a suggestion. Maybe worth a try?

There was a cat sleeping also on my boat, she was nice and furry but I didn't want to encourage her.
So I had a hose on the ready and so as soon as I saw her I gave her a good dose of water and she jumped like the devil got her
Second time (not having learned the first time), I did the same, this time with a finer, nore accurate jet of water: that was the end of it
Also, the problem is that owners don't really care about their pets: they don't spay/ neuter them, and as a result they walk around howling at night (at home)
I took care of that: a catapult loaded with hard soil that brakes on contact was just what the doctor ordered: they stopped coming to fight with my 18 year old cat
People need to be responsible with animals
I DO like the blow pipe, will need to experiment...when I first started reading it , I thought the pipe was the weapon, but I was relieved to see it was the spit balls what did the damage!
Learned so much about appl;ication for vinegar though!!!

Be careful what you wish for. The duty feline may be keeping those pooping birdies off your boat...

We have several semi-feral cats and a fox that patrol our yard. As a result there is no mouse problem around here and very little rabbit damage to my gardens. I encourage them with all of my table scraps.

I use a motion activated sprinkler to keep birds off my boat and dock. Should work well for cats too.

Try spreading some tin foil on their favorite areas. It is supposed to deter them because of the strange crinkly feeling, so don't lay it out all smooth. I put it down under a dozen roses I bought my wife after one of the cats ate some leaves and yacked them up. Seems to help.

Feline be gone

The folks that own the small marina where I keep my boat have a few cats and one or two of them have taken to sleeping on top of mainsail cover and my sunbrella cover over my sliding hatch. The cat hair is not too much of a bother but as I am getting ready to do some topside sanding and painting, is there any non lethal way to discourage them from sleeping on my boat?
We have a problem with gulls at certain times of the year. A very effective method to keep them away is to tie a piece of heavy monofilament fishing line about 6 inches above and parallel to the boom using bungee cord. We actually run it from the topping lift, around the mast and back, doubling it. It keeps the gulls away and I suspect it would discourage the cats. Bill Fields

A wrist-Rocket slingshot with frozen grapes will make all cats take the long way around your boat/house, and the six-pack and territory marking keeps possums, skunks and raccoons out of the yard, too.

You shouldn't hit the cat with anything that if it hit you would make a bruise. Sloppy spit balls will be annoying but not harmful. vinegar is annoying but not harmful. A determined cat will find a way no matter what you do and if you are too mean will retaliate in ways that will be unmistakable.

Its been fun reading all the answers to your question. The bottom line is even if their cats can roam free the owners are still responsible for any damage that their animal does to your property. Be that a torn screen or a cleaning bill. The first time they have to pay for what their feline does will most likely end the problem.

Ross, would you be so benign after the male cat sprays your halyard and sheet tails and gets hair all over the dodger?

Yes. I had one spray the inside of my van. ten years later i could still smell it on damp days. lol. They are just being cats and doing anything after the deed is revenge.

Squirt gun...

after the cat I inherited from my daughter made itself at home, I found a shot from a good old fashion squirt gun kept him from scratching and climbing on things that didn't belong to him outright. Now all I have to do is hold it up so he can see it when aggravating me and he heads for the hills (under a bed upstairs).

Red pepper sprinkled periodically around the bushes outside keeps the neighborhood cats for using them as an outhouse.
