Rough Waters On Lake Erie today - vid attached

Fall is showing a bit of uglyness today.
Bad day at Edgewater Marina, The Starlyte is fine but there is a lot of damage, mostly to some of the power boaters (when their transom & drives hit the dock, most are backed in. I'll see how it is tomm.
Here's a quick vid of the beach next to the marina, pretty amazing..

Update - went there today - 2 boats went under... each a total loss.
That lake is unbelievable! I think I'll stick to sailing the bays in my area. Although, some of the guys in our club were watching the river during the hurricane and they said that it was really kicking up out there. Three of our sailboats pulled up their mooring blocks and landed on the shore while they were watching from the club windows.

I remember about 20 yrs ago standing on the observation deck at the Municipal Marina in Leamington, Ont, across the lake from Cleveland, with a strong cold wind blowing out of the west over the warm 70 degree water in mid September and counting at least a half a dozen water spouts.
On the other hand, we're in the middle of a stationary high right now (sunny, temps in the 70s and light winds, water about 67 degrees). Coming out of the marina in Gibraltar, MI last tuesday evening we could look across the lake and easily see Pelee and N. Bass Islands a good 35 mi away (looked like they were less than ten miles from us). A first for me. After a mile or so out they started to disappear.

That's amazing! I've heard of Pelee and Bass Islands near Put In Bay. I've heard of water spouts but fortunately I've never seen one. They have appeared in the Bristol RI area though, through the years. If I ever saw one of those things out there coming my way I'd do one of two things; I either get my sails down in a hurry and motor out of there as quick as I can, or I'd s*&t my pants! I'd probably do the latter. :D

Great pics guys! My boat is under the cover but I still have my kayak to use. I live across the street from neighbors who live on a lake and I sometimes put the kayak in and paddle over to an island out there. Penny and I paddled out to the island last Tuesday. I brought my "bug-out bag" with me, some steak, and a small can of beans. When we got there, I built a fire pit with rocks not far from the shore in a small clearing and chopped up some dead hard wood that was laying on the ground. For getting the fire started, I used some dead leaves, birch bark, cotton with petroleum jelly on it, and my magnesium flint Fire Steel striker. Les Straud and Bear Grills would be proud of me. I cut a sassafras sapling and used it for a spit to cook up the steak over the red hot coals. Man that was fun. Penny was having a blast running all over that island. We ate like kings.
We often do this over the winter months on mild days when we cross the Taunton River and go beach combing along that shoreline. I recently found 63 golf balls on that shore line. A country club borders that shore line. Hey it's something that we enjoy doing and we never really know what we're going to find washed up on the shore. I've found two telescopic boat hooks , three mooring balls, fishing plugs, boat fenders, golf balls, life jackets, and a yard cart. it's the next best thing to sailing.

Love it Joe, me and my old friend Ed used to do the "outdoor lunch buffet" quite a bit. We haven't done that in quite some time, but your words brought back some fond memories.

I was able to spend a couple of nights on the hook Mon. thru Wed. The mornings were quiet and placid, cool with a bit of fog. This picture captures the moment.
