Dismasted

Ok time for my 2c First this is not a small job for someone with experience. Before you take on the job find out about getting another mast. cost of mast cost of shpping If you cant find a used mast you might have to go for a new one Ballpark 7 or 8 hundred Next you need to find out how soft the deck is This could be a major repair. Between the deck, mast, chain plates and any other stuff your going to find, The repair might cost more than the purchase of an equivalent boat. Do the numbers before you jump in Good luck

Ok time for my 2c .... Before you take on the job find out about getting another mast. ...
:lame:

dude... we are on page four of a thread that started three months ago.... you obviously chimed in without reading the tread.... for that matter it is not clear if you read the original post. He has already found deck rot, pulled off the deck skin and has done major repair.

Not really helpful this late in the game to suggest "Before you take on the job..."

I'm now at a stage of seemingly endless filling/fairing. I have been using west system 407 fairing filler with polyester resin, and sanding it down with 40 grit paper on a random orbital palm sander. The sander doesn't seem to take material off very quickly even with the very coarse paper. Am I using the wrong tool here? What would you use?
When I redid my cockpit floor I used micro balloons to finish it off. They are like a can of cloud you mix with resin. Depending on the amounts you can get from pancake batter to a paste. Worked wonders as I had it thin and it was self leveling.

A word of warning. The micro balloons Being small glass balls are nasty. Use in no wind, wear a respirator, gloves, eye protection etc.

Oh, and an angle grinder and flap disks 60 grit will cut through the stuff like butter.

I picked up a 60 grit flap disk for my grinder this afternoon and it worked like a charm - thanks for the suggestion! The deck is really coming together. I put another layer of thickened resin on it to fill in the holes, and spread it around. I think another iteration or two and I'll be ready for some gelcoat.

It's amazing how much easier a job is when you're using the right tools. Thanks again, guys, for being an amazing resource for this type of knowledge!
