That identified a weakness in the companionway structure that needed to be corrected.

If you have a wildhair to go on Walk-a-bout, go. Read the Poem JRowan has at bottom of his page by Twain. Twenty years from now we will regret what we did not do, not what we did.......Is it irresponsible? Of course. What life changing event ever started with common sense. Go for it and don't wait too long. Good luck

Striking an object in the ocean has to be in the catagory of hitting a tree in the desert. You can do it but you have to be very unlucky or realy work at it.
Ever heard of a ship called Titanic? I've cross the Atlantic 4 times and most of the Pacific, you'd be amazed how much crap is out there that can hole your hull.

It is pretty hard to find anything in the water even another boat. Running into the corner of a floating container would probably penetrate the hull but non metal flotsam will most probably just thump very hard and go away. Before you say Ice, it is sometimes catagorized as a mineral.

With the river flood entering the bay you will find lots of stuff but nothing floating that will poke holes in a boat. Fuel oil tanks and propane tanks are going to be the worst of it. We get a lot of wheels with tire and tube floating around. Trees are abundant.

Cruise the B.C. coast and see some serious floating logs and "deadheads" which float vertically with the top just at the surface.

And if you hit one of those at 5 kts there is a terrible thump and and a push to one side and some cussin' from the below deck crew.

On a lucky day you won't hit any. ;) But how many boats have been broken on these?

More than a few over the years. When you hit a 500 to 1000 lb or more log that has absorbed a lot of water it doesn't give much. Something has to.
