UPDATE:
My new pump arrived today, one day early, from the UK. As expected it was a dead ringer for my original pump. I had everything cleaned and prepped for re-assembly, so at 2pm I started.
5 hours later the pump was in, all the pulleys back in place, and the timing belt re-installed and tensioned. I pulled all the timing pins and turned the crank over two revolutions to check for binding. All good.
So I hit the starter and the engine fired right up. I ran it for maybe 10 seconds and shut it down.
Then it was time to put the outer timing belt cover on and install the water pump pulley. I still have to tighten the alternator and water pump belt and add antifreeze to the engine. That will be tomorrow.
I'm done for today. Time for dinner and an adult beverage.

Hip hip Hooray !!!

Total time from start to finish was What?

Jim...
Tear-down was about 6 hours including a Harbor Freight run. Clean up and prep for re-assembly about 2 hours. Re-assembly to the test run about 5 hours. Final alternator/water pump belt install and antifreeze fill another hour. All over a period of 3 days. At the standard marina mechanic's rate of $125/hr, 12 hours = $1500. I am retired and my labor rate is only $0.18/hr, so my total labor cost is $2.16.
Before you ask, I do not generally accept offers of jobs, but friends get me for free. :D

Sounds like a suspect mechanic if you’re asking. Go slow and take pictures as you dis-assemble. I find having the service manual as well as a parts manual helps for good visuals

Rich - There's a "grey beard" mechanic out of Windsor CT (north of Hartford) Brian McDonnell (860) 243-9114
If anyone knows how to work on it - Brian does. He's a wiz, and can answer most questions about VP engines without looking things up! I haven't been in touch for a few years, but he has a van and will travel.
