I gave up on them long ago

I was shopping for new canvas for my C30 two seasons ago. I live on the south shore on long Island. Typically here on LI there are two shores for sailing, the North (the Sound - deep water, lighter winds in the summer) and the south (the bay, shallow, good summer breezes). Also up North is where the prime real estate resides $$$ and along with that prices and services are usually higher. Of course that’s where TCS is located. I called them for a quote on the C30 and they were ridiculously high, I never gave them a second thought. Funny, because until now they had a pretty good reputation for doing quality work. I later found out they screwed a friend of mine over not putting lazy jack slits in the new sail cover he had them make (along with full canvas). They jerked him around so much that he finally went into the shop and took the sail cover back unfinished and brought it to another shop. Can you imagine spending a couple of thousand dollars on all new canvas and then having to do that? I ended up going to Sailors Choice in Amityville (south shore). They did and excellent job, were on time and saved me literally $1000. Screw TCS!

Another Way to Get the Word Out

Put a sign up on your boat that says "Ask me how I was ripprd off by The Canvas Store". One of those in a couple of marinas will get some attention.

Not sure Rick...

If 3500 views, five pages and at least a few people telling them about this thread, along with knowing their operations manager has seen it too... I'm pretty sure they are going to hunker down and hope this blows over. Heck, even if they DO pay now, their reputation among the people here is pretty much shot for the next year or so, plus any archive searches through the end of time. Amazing though - the second most popular post (at 2500 views) is the uncle's 1/2 million. We could rename this area of the forum "Schemers and Dreamers" at this rate. :) Dave

People's Court

Brian, I WAS contacted by The People's Court TV show and asked to appear. They get all the public filings around NY as they film there, and call the folks involved. I agreed to do it, but apparently McGovern declined because I never heard back from them. Too bad for him too, because the show guarantees payment in 10 days if you win and the defendant doesn't pay. All I want is my money, and I probably wouldn't have started this thread if I had been paid! Its nive to hear more and more storied popping up here saying I'm not the only one who's had this amny problems with TCS. Sorry for those who've had, but its nice to know I have company! Tim

OK Robin or Tonto's partner

good move, but I'm sure Rebecca the operations manager is following this on a daily and has not said a word since Tim let her know the real facts of the court case and how someone dropped the ball and did'nt file something to stall this case. I still say Tim needs to have the Suffolk Consumer Affairs Dept. on this cause they WILL give him more problems and a big headache.

Dept of CA

RAD, I contacted the Consumer Affairs dept a few weeks ago, and was told they only deal with licensed contractor issues on home improvement problems. I'm still waiting for the info/forms from the County on filing for a "property execution" where the Sheriff's duputies will show up at TCS's door with an order to pay up. If they don't, the deputies will go in and take an inventory of items for seizure. They will give them another week, show up again for payment, and if TCS doesn't pay up they will begin to seize items for auction. They told me they will take anything from office equipment, computers, inventory, to vehicles, etc. It's ANOTHER $200 to have it executed that way, but I'm prepared to pay up! At this point I don't know why McGovern hasn't simply posted on this thread that he's sorry, he'll pay up immediately, and promise to take care of all similar problems now or in the future in a prompt and reasonable manner. He has probably destroyed his own business because he seems to have a problem just admitting when he is wrong. I notified him in April I intended to do this if he forced me to file the small claim action. Then I actually waited until he was in default of the judgment before doing it! Tim

This is a great thread...

Tim: It is entirely possible that TCS has never seen, or is aware of, this thread and all the negative publicity. I suggest you download it, print it, and send it to them in snail mail.

They have seen it

Warren, Look back at page 1 or 2, The Ops Manager has seen it and they know it exists. They haven't bothered to answer my original questions, but I expected no less because that's what I got for 15 months...denial, ignored, accused of being immature and not knowing how to install a piece of canvas over a boat, and an "it can't be wrong, we are always right" attitude. And....

They have your 1500 bucks and the cover that never fit and he knows that. Not very good for buisness cause I would never give him lets say a deposit for a job in fear I would never get my product. and I was very interested in a cover at the Newport show and then this article was posted. I'm still going to have a cover made but not from them.

T

Tim

That too....

RAD, You're right, they do still have my money and the cover. I don't want the cover back either, and the court says I don't have to take it! Thanks for being the #1 fan of this thread and keeping it up front! If you're ever in Detroit, email me and I'll take ya out for a sail and a couple golden-colored malt-flavored carbonated-liquid 12oz. units! Tim

Google results

Almost everyone uses Google to find things on the internet these days... Google "The Canvas Store" (with quotes) and you'll first find two entries for their company, followed by two boatUS forum threads referring to this thread, followed by a couple of Norwalk boat show vendor listings and then two more references directly to this thread. Tim, I do believe we have them surrounded! :D Dave

Google

Dave, You are right about Google. The more hits a page gets, the higher it gets in Google's sort engine. This and other pages have come to the top due to the high number of hits they're getting. If you go to the second page of results, I think my own "blog" is starting to show up, the one with the PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF that the cover didn't fit! With over 4000 hits here, albeit multiple hits from the same readers I'm sure, I'm not sure why my blog only has 400+. So folks, be sure to click the link in the original post to see the pictures, and make sure to click the link in that page to see the second page. Tim
