Billy...
...only drives power boats. He collaborated with a builder to develop the Shelter Island Runabout (up to 50'). He also owns a fishing workboat named for his daughter, Alexa, which he keeps in Sag Harbor (and wrote a song about it). He also has a Florida Bay Cruiser named "Islander", He has another FBC build and customized locally named "Red Head" which was customized to look like an English pub, but was reportedly sold. He did Contract the IYRS (Int'l Yacht Restoration Society )(?) in Newport to build a small sailboat for his daughter and was shown in the newspaper as he made a visit there a few years ago.

….Walter’s boat was/is called Assignment. When he was on vacation, his staff could tell his boss and others he was on “Assignment” and couldn’t be reached. Bob Seger is a racer, haven’t heard or seen from his crew in a few years, but I know he loves distance racing, especially night long races. The few distance races I’ve been on, the night time legs left me a nervous wreck by dawn’s early light ….. Ferg

Bob Seger
Seger had a Santa Cruz 50 (or 52?) a few years back, and competed in the Port Huron-Mackinac race only, i.e., not out there slogging it out every Saturday in the DRYA fleet. He quit after a very public controversy (some of it in Sailing World magazine) about using sails not on the rating certificate, and allegedly having a gift-rating. He won the Mac race 2 or 3 years in a row against some of the best sailors on the Great Lakes in some of the newest and hottest boats around, and never did the Chicago-Mac race because the Chicago rating was different, and not to his favor. At least that's the way I heard it, and it was from a very credible source. Draw your own conclusions. For the last few years he's had a J109 that (as far as I know) has never been raced. I was docked NEXT to him all season about 3 years ago and saw him only a few times, and all those were daysails with his son and one other person. I have always liked his music, but to be quite honest he wasn't a very friendly guy. He never said hello to us, and never once thanked us for fending-off, throwing lines, etc when he came in to the dock.

Tony Danza
When I was through Santa Cruz 5 years ago, we took in the week night races from the SCYC and one of the barflys told me that one of the SC 75s out on the course belonged to Tony Danza of the TV show Taxi fame. Boat was named "Taxi Dancer". He apparently didnt sail it in the week night races.

And let's not forget environmental activist and freshman U.S. Representative John Hall of New York (former songwriter, singer and guitarist with the band Orleans), who has logged lots of bluewater miles aboard a 39-foot sloop. One more: Senator Ted Kennedy, who still races the Figawi from Hyannis to the Vineyard aboard his Concordia yawl.

Jimmy Boyd who sang "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", appeared in many films and TV series is an avid sailor who I saw in Cabo on his large sailboat.I also saw him racing a beautiful Cal40 in Newport Beach. Many other celebrities own large power boats like John Travolta's "Elegante" and of course Johhny Carson who owned the 140 foot Westport "Serengetti"
