...Heck, I was only planning on 2 pairs of underwear. You are making me rethink my plan here!
That is all you need. One on, optional, and the other one drying on the lifeline .

Don't forget some warm stuff though. It was just a few days ago that on one stretch in the wind and clouds I had jeans on, a tee-shirt, a long sleeve shirt and a hooded sweatshirt on for most of the day. At night I was down to a sheet or not but then had to go back to a sheet with a wool throw cover over that and in fact two of those covers for a couple nights.

You get acclimated to the warmth and then it doesn't take much to make you cold especially if it is raining,

Hi guys,

I'm moving south today hoping to be in Georgetown Sunday. I have a narrow weather window so might have to hole up before that depending on conditions.

I'll check in the next chance I get.

If you haven't noticed the links under my name I have more of the trip with lots of pictures on my web site and have filled in the part from the boatyard to when I cross to Bimini but still have some text to add to that when I get the chance. Here is the link to the main menu and the day to day is at the bottom of that menu...

Glad to hear you made it. Where are you anchored? Over on the Stocking Island side? Two suggestions for wifi connection. Try right next to the grocery store near the dinghy dock, outside, on the north side of the building. Also, across the street there is a small cafe with a screened in sitting area in back, on the water side. I got wifi service there. Also, I highly recommend the green coconut water/gin drink they fix up there. Very refreshing, and fun to watch the guy whacking coconuts with his machete during the preparation. I expect that the volleyball game is still going, over on Stocking Island. If the Family Island Regatta is taking place soon, it's well worth hanging out to watch it. Great sailing competition, and a neat festival in Georgetown.

Hey I was off Monument Beach the first night but yesterday moved over to the east side of Moss Cays almost straight out from the inlet to Lake Victoria and they aren't kidding about the current coming out of there on an ebb tide. I was WOT on the 3 1/2 going in and hardly made way into the current.

Also if you go just a ways in to the long dock on the right, opposite the dingy dock, you can get fuel there and fill in your dinghy or on the dock so that was convenient.

Going back to the boat the outboard died about 100 yards short and had a hull of a time paddling into the wind to get to the boat. It has a small tank and thought it went dry but when I filled it wasn't so sure. I won't go in again in as much wind, waves and especially the current again at the cut into the lake. I'll be picky about when that is. In fact not totally sure I will go back in but probably will. Maybe start heading north on Monday.

I'm still having problems on land feeling OK. I get on solid ground and I just start feeling sick to my stomach and lightheaded. I get back on the water and feel fine. I guess I'm just going to have to stay on this boat the rest of my life
.

Like Russ said I'm getting wifi from the boat but do have a netbook and laptop I could take ashore but don't have the current web stuff on it. I lost the connection I had when I was a Monument but have two here that are better but at times have to switch from one to the other. Not much problem getting e-mail but uploading the trip report takes a better connection and I seem to have that most of the time here now so will try and post more, but might wait until I get back up to Black Point to post more as I plan on going back there and washing cloths and filling water and such as it is smaller and easier to do things there. If the wind goes down here I might get water as you can get it right at the dinghy dock but won't go back in until I feel better about the outboard on the dingy and then in way less wind so I could paddle back if I needed to. The wind is suppose to go down the next few days.

I'll report later on going out up north and back in here. The going out was easy but once out was a different story,

Sum... I noticed your complaints of sea legs/land legs while reading the website. Did a little research and the consensus is that you can treat the "land sickness" affliction using many of the popular motion sickness remedies... i.e. the patch, bonine, ginger products, wrist bands, etc. Since you seem to be ashore a lot right now, to explore and provision, perhaps wearing a patch all the time will give you some relief....

Been loving your updates, with all the detail and great photos. Stay safe.

Thanks, I wondered about that a little. I don't have patches but bought some of the over the counter stuff. I'll try it.

So far I've never been sea-sick, but a couple times on this trip I was thinking this will be the time. It kind of surprises me that I haven't been sick as when I was on a carrier in the Navy going from Washington down to San Diego we were in quite the storm and some guys got sick and I felt that if I thought about it much I'd join them. I went out on an observation deck and saw a destroyer not to far from us that looked like it was taking water over the whole boat. One look at that and I knew I'd of been sick if I was on it.

Hope things are good with you,

Sumner

Sumner: Getting seasick on a carrier would be embarrassing! I rode the destroyer USS Kidd DD661 and rode out 5 typhoons with 50' swells! Never did get seasick but felt bad. Have fun. Chief

Exactly why I wanted to avoid it ;). I know I would of been on that destroyer though. I had a chief that said every time he had sea duty he was sick. That would be a bummer. I think now the reason I haven't is that when it is bad I'm too busy dealing with the situation at the time.

I thought about it a while ago and I put in back on March 9th and so far 40+ days later have maybe been off the boat 8-10 hours total so I need to get on shore more. I'm going to try Joe's recommendations and see how that works. I guess I'm a little gun shy after my incident driving by Dallas ....

Joe thanks, I took a Dramamine before going ashore and I felt a lot better than other times I've gone ashore. Was able to go to a restaurant and enjoy the wait and the meal and walking around Georgetown.

On a side note I got snapper strips at Edgewater here after another cruiser recommended the place and the wait was really long but the fish was really good and well worth waiting for.

Today I waited for slack water to to in and through the narrow opening into the Lake Victoria but of course hit the incoming tide leaving and I can't believe the current under that bridge. I had the 3 1/2 HP wide open and hardly moved through it. Not near the waves outside so didn't get soaked going to the boat.

Notice the depth of the back of the dinghy above as it gets into the current and he has to give it some gas and it sinks and the bow comes up. Now...

... as he is in the current and on a lot of gas the back goes down even further. It is an interesting ride through there with the current. Right now the tides are running a little over 3 feet and all the water to fill and drain Lake Victoria on those 3 foot changes goes under that bridge.

I was going to drain the carb this morning but it started right up but then died a couple hundred yards from the boat like it was out of gas. Got it started and ran it a lot harder and it never died again. I did drain the carb when I got back to the boat. I'm thinking there was some water that was plugging the main jet at part throttle and when I finally ran it WOT that it sucked it through, just a thought and I'll never know.

I ran out of money, what I took ashore, so will get more from my stash and go back in tomorrow and get more groceries as they have a well stocked store right at the dinghy dock. I also found this little general purpose store that had about two to three times more merchandise that what looked like would fit in there. The aisles were very narrow. They even had a weight belt so bought it and one 3 lb weight. Anyone have any idea how much weight I need with a full suit and with a partial suit (short legs/short arms)? I'd bought another belt and some weight some years back but not sure where it is, probably on the Endeavour. Most items on these islands are very expensive compared t what we are use to paying but they had fairly large SS carabiners for less than I' found in the states so I bought a couple as I use them on everything.

I also got water from a spigot on the dinghy dock and a lady and her husband that were there, had just got to Georgetown, asked if she could test it for salinity and I said yes and she pulled out a tester and put it in the water and said that if was good at 300 something. She said under 300 was better but that this was fine. Thought that was interesting. Not sure if I'll need to drink the water or not. I started with 62 gallons total with 12 of that being water from the grocery store in the 2 1/2 gallon and 1 gallon sized containers and still have 33 1/2 gallons left at the moment. I drink as much or more than I use for washing dishes and sponge baths. I could of probably made the whole trip on what I started with but tomorrow will fill up 2 other 4 gallon containers and maybe use some of that for washing cloths if I don't do that at Rocky Point. I washed cloths twice with rain water from inside the dinghy (had some salt water in it) and that worked well but I had painted the dinghy flooring with some blue paint and it is coming off in little specks in the saltwater environment so had the blue specs on the cloths and towels so probably won't wash like that again, at least not the towel,

Hi everyone, I haven't had good Internet connections lately so have just been putting up additions to the trip report on my site when possible. If you go to the link below you can see them. I've posted up to getting to Georgetown and still need to fill in the narrative for some of the early days of the trip.

They are suppose to have some races here today with the traditional Bahama sailboats with the different islands competing against each other. They have been out practicing and the boats are really cool with long planks that go out over the sides and guys hike way out onto the planks. I'll have pictures later but Google it.

I'll probably leave in the morning and start working back north up the Exumas and then jump up by Nassau and then the Berry's. From there hopefully to the Abacos and then around the first of June back to Florida.

I'll post when I can on here but you might also want to check (bookmark) my site for updates also,

Sumner

Hey Sumner,

I finally found the time to catch up on your trip reports. Amazing adventure and one we are planning just as soon as I can retire (4 1/2 years to go). Reading your reports makes us feel like some day it really will happen.

We definitely have to meet one of these times we're both in Florida.

Safe travels...

Chris

Yep, deep water is your friend.... you're also learning the "lee shore" axiom. Motor sailing with a reefed main will help keep the boat more stable... that's why the older, slow moving trawlers were equipped with a short mast to hoist a stabilizing sail.
