Since we've had such a rousing discussion about _what_ to listen to, let's hear about where you listen to it. Do you prefer to use your sound system at anchor, at the dock, underway, all or all of the above? Or, are you a sailor who goes to your boat for peace and leaves the sounds at home? Share your opinions here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

Jimmy Buffet mpt allowed

On our Catalina 25 (#5050, "Even Chance"), we just have a boombox. When I'm working on the boat I listen to NPR or occasionally a CD, but when sailing I prefer to listen to the wind, enjoying the silence. Under no circumstances is the ubiquitous and notoriously untalented Jimmy Buffet and his one song ("Cheeseburgers in Margaritaville" -- every song sounds exactly the same) allowed to foul our beautiful vessel.

Music Location

I have a nice car type am/fm stereo with cassette connected to bose speakers mounted in the boat I almost never use it. I mostly use a cheap boombox in the cockpit underway or relaxing at anchor and find that one set of batteries lasts all season if using the radio and at least all week using the tape player on vacation. This way I don't drain my batteries and have to run the engine. Blasting music at the dock is like doing it in an apartment complex, not a good way to make friends.

At Anchor

Everyone's entitled to listen to what they want but not everyone wants to hear what I'm listening to. I'm always concerned about blasting someone else in the marina/anchorage. I use a CD boom box kept to a quiet level when at anchor or at the dock. Underway, I prefer the sound of the wind and the ocean since I'm totally consumed with the sailing experience.

Our Favorite!

Years ago we sailed to Jimmy Buffet songs but Brooke is right, after too long they do start sounding the same. Then we switched to New Age music but it was just too laid back and strange. Last year we discovered Rap music and now play it all the time while sailing and at the dock. Often full blast. It is highly energizing and helps us win races. Now everyone at the dock hates us and leaves us alone which is great! Try it you'll like it!

Peter C., you know what they say?

RAP IS CRAP! But full blast at the dock? Have you ever been shot with a flare gun? Pepcid and rolaids will not cure the burning sensation.

The Gauntlet is Throwed!

"Notoriously untalented"?? That TRUELY is an insult, my dear. Not only to Mr Buffet, but to his fans as well. Absolutely Un-American! But what else could be expected from anyone who would listen to NPR while anywhere near a boat?? BTW, My wife listens to the local classical station while we are underway, an it ain't too bad either (And that comes from an old S/D/R&R fan!)

Buffet and Talent in the same breath????

Since Cheeseburger in Paradise I've given up on McDonalds.. As for NPR, it beats the hell out of Rush Limblow! But, to each his/her own.. and I'm never going to Florida again either... Ron/KA5HZV

I love Jimmy

But I can certainly see where Brooke is coming from. I had a boyfriend once (he didn't last) who didn't like Jimmy either. I think he moved to Kansas or something! I think the thing these folks don't understand is that Jimmy isn't about the *music* so much as the *story*. And he has such wonderful stories to tell! BTW, that boyfriend eventually came to *accept* Jimmy - but he didn't like it much! LaDonna

Harmonic Agreement

I am going to have to agree with Brooke on this one. The irony of the opposition in this argument is this: I have always considered Jimmy Buffet the worst communist of them all. For instance, imagine Lenin or Castro up on stage waving his arms about, preaching to thousands of screaming fans that really can't fathom the totalitarian control that the leader has on them. Oh wait, am I talking about Lenin... or Buffet? Is there a difference? In fact, which one is worse? Lenin and Castro would be giving impassioned speeches about rights/nonrights, with occaisional genocide thrown into the mix... Buffet would be singing heartless tunes like "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw", annihilating his listeners' intellect and imagination. In both cases, we have an unprecedented death toll... but the difference is passion in the message, right? As Jimmy Buffet's rapidly multiplying toadies continue to conform in the Hawaiian shirts and drunkenness of the PUKE (Parrothead Underground Kommunist Exercises), remember to keep Margaritaville away from that true symbol of American Freedom (and the way we got here in the first place!): The Sailboat

Silence, Music, Baseball

I dunno if anyone has noticed but baseball is great to listen to on the boat. Other than that, sometimes I feel like music -- the Rippingtons are perfect for sailing -- other times the wind and the water are what I wanna hear. Depends on the mood and whos with me. Duane

Buffett on tap

Maybe Brooke needs to READ a little Bubba to appreciate the soundtrack! Cruising along reading "Where's Joe Merchant" and listening to "Desdemona is Building a Rocket Ship". If you will open your mind you will appreciate the beauty!& get the point of the lyrics. BTW, "Cheeseburger" & "Margaritaville" are my LEAST favorite. Had a friend once that swore that when he got his big boat he would have nothing of Buffett. He now confesses that after owning his new big boat (35')for 2 weeks he went out and bought 2 of Jimmy's CDs! For me, its R&B (Raggae & Buffett). share the wind brother

Way too Serious

I think some of you are taking this way too seriously. It is supose to be enjoyable out there. If you want to listen to Jimmy Buffett or classical music, show tunes, or NPR that's fine. Just keep the volume down so I can enjoy my cheeseburber, big Kosher pickle and cold draft beer.

JAZZZZ

When the wind starts pumping I like to crank up the sound track from the Thomas Crown affair. It goes well with the head sail sheets straining. Other wise, what ever fits & feels right at the time including nothing at all.

Way too serious!!!!

When on the water I usually go between Buffet (die hard Parrot Head) and Jazz. Classical seems to work it's way in when the winds are over 25...Right of the Valkeries cooks when heeled at 20 degrees or better. When the kids are on the boat, I've found the best is major cotton wads in the ears. One problem, how do I keep the boat from vibrating from all the base?

Agree With Peter C

Rap at the dock full blast? I'll let Peter handle the flare gun while I don the scuba tanks and fire up the underwater drill. Nothing better than listening to the glub glub of a rapper while watching the offender tryin to extinguish the flare so appropriately placed somewhere within the dark regions of the anatomy. There goes the neighborhood!

music

Underway it's usually the sounds of wind and wave, unless the Dodger game is on the radio. Working on the boat, it's classic rock and blues. Anchored or moored, it's usually girl singers, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Etta James, Patsy Cline or classical. Jimmy has made an appearance or two. BTW, I think the rapper was pulling your collective chain. Worked, didn't it? Larry W.

Music Capital

Well I think I'll skip the whole Buffet thing (although I didn't own one of his cd's till I bought my Cat 27), now i love his music. I grew up on the water in a coastal town in Texas (Corpus Christi) and my music has changed over the years. I use to surf/skate to Judas Preist and Black Flag. Now i love to sail and listen to local Austin bands such as Vallejo and Push Monkey, under sail I prefer mellow stuf....Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, etc. When I am working on her ....I need something a little harder....STP (Stone Temple Pilots), Aerosmith, Smashing Pumpkings....etc. But I will say this, I regularly fish off-shore with the sport fishing crowd...and we always play one band heading back to port to weigh in for a tournament....AC/DC....nothing like being the last boat in to weigh in with the winning fish and Angus Young crackling throught the speakers. We just refuse to grow up! Sean
