Alternator Bracket Problem

I have an 1986 Cat. 30 with a Universal 25 desiel. The problem is with the alternator braket belt tensioning bolt. It is the bolt that goes thru the oblong hole in the bracket that when loosened allows you to adjust the alternator belt tension and then when tightened (in theory) allows the braket to hold the tension. My bolt goes through the braket and into the top of the motor just below where you add oil. The problem is that it just rotates. I can't tighten or back the bolt out. Seems like this may be a common problem. Any help? Tim

Ughh

Tim, I've not had this problem but would like to offer some help if I can. It sounds like this bolt loosened and the engine vibration stripped the threads. Try loosening the bolt and at the same time applying pressure in the outward direction. Try prying the bolt towards you by wedging a screwdriver under the head while unscrewing with a wrench. Keep at it and it should come out. I'm hoping the bolt threads are stripped rather than the engine threads. Good luck. John
