What would have made the movie great, would have Wilson float up, the two exchange glances and then float away.

Really, about half the dialogue in the movie was the F bomb. (If you haven't seen it yet, don't let that scare you away)

The movie, only having one actor, was different, I'm not sure it will ever go down as a movie the masses return to. It was something you expect out of Caan. I doubt, outside of HBO or similar, or On Demand, it will never see a television audience. None the less, I still am glad I saw it.

Saw All is lost and Capt. Phillips, also John Rousmaniere said at the Chicago boat show " I am very sad that some of the sailing world has criticized the movie this way. Everybody, does not do everything perfectly nor could they be expected to" I agree wholeheartedly. They are movies, there has to be some latitude...

I think it should be criticized, in doing so perhaps they will spend 20 additional minutes with the next script to get some of the sailing right. It was not like they needed to change the technical aspects to create drama, they just didn't check to see how it would be done the right way.

We try very hard to get it right every time we sail and be consistant but... there are times and things happen that you just do the best you can.. and sometimes it is not enough..
For what it is ..it is a good movie Also Redford is 77 years old.. up the mast..interesting

I prefer when a movie gets the technical parts correct, especially when all that they got wrong was so easily corrected.

If you try to raise a hank on jib over roller furling.......maybe sailing is not for you. ;)

How the movies mess up our military uniforms and insignia is one of the things that distracts me! Chief

Ha

Just this week I was watching TV with my kids and there was a character refereed to as "Major" . He was wearing lieutenant bars on his lapel and I don't even know what was on his cover.

My Favorite Rant....

There are many aspects that make a good story. I have always beleived that accuracy is important as it makes the story beleiveable to those that know the topic and (sadly) accurate to those who do not.

When I see a reporter telling me that the killers were armed with AK-47s when they are clearly armed with M-16's I have to wonder how accurate the rest of the story must be.

With movies being produced for 200M+ I expect a film-maker to invest some of the money in getting the technical aspects of a film right. I demand that the story reflect the accuracy of the event, people, location being portrayed. It ads to the overall realism and beleiveability of the story.

If you want to create a world that does not exist...do it well. That is the reason it is called make-beleive.

I just watched Lone Survivor. Of course, they had to take some liberties for production reasons. I understand that. Not one scene detracted from the movie.

Had they chosen to put the men in pajamas...I would not had the same reaction.

Accuarcy counts for no other reason than people who do not do what we do will look at a movie and come away with the belief that every frame is, "just the way it really is." The film-makers fantasy becomes the film-goers reality."

As a former infantryman, paratrooper...current motorcyclist, sailor, woodworker, and musician I spend a lot of time saying.....

"Nope...it ain't like that."

All is "NOT" Lost!!!

At the theater this week I saw a preview for another boating-themed movie due out, I think, in May? About a guy who builds his own boat and takes to the sea and has many adversities along the way. No doubt the correct historical and nautical facts will be in the eye of the beholder, but maybe they should have consulted Roger Long as Technical Advisor. Sorry to say I do not recall the actual name of the film, but I recall the special effects looked pretty good... and that they had animals 2 x 2 in it.

Great, Master/Commander meets Harry Potter. Russel Crowe needs to change his voice a little. He sounds the same in every movie.

I was just thinking the same thing about Anthony Hopkins.... both sound too much like previous characters.

I love the movie "Dove" about a teenager who sailed around the world. Almost.
This is real sailing.
I thought the boat was a Cal 24 with modified ports but someone told me it was a Lapworth 24 which I had never heard of or seen but there it was. Didn't look like it was that rugged but it made it through some heavy weather so I guess it was ok.

For classic sailing, Master and Commander. There's a little known series by PBS or BBC about Horatio Hornblower which is even better than M&C for sailing if you're into Square Rigged boats.

Finally message in a bottle has a beautiful wood sailboat which Kevin Costner builds as part of the film. Some nice sailing footage in this film too.

What I heard about all is lost from friends was that it was more about Robert Redford than about sailing. I have not seen it yet. Wait till it comes on Netflix.

I really enjoyed Dove. The best sailing sequence I have ever watched in a movie was in Captain's Courageous when they were racing back with their catch.

Not without warping everyones seeming abilities to differentiate reality from voodoo. But some still believe zeus, apollo, witchcraft, democracy, etc..

Saw it last night. Already on cable.

Apparently, the shipping container really had nothing to do with the ultimate outcome, except for dousing the radio.

There were several oddities, as others have identified, and I was able to overlook them. but 2 things really bugged me:

1. All that fabulous and expensive emergency equipment (Sea anchor, storm jib, life raft stocked with survival gear, top grade sextant, and other stuff) and no PLB - $250, or handheld radio $200.

2. What did the disconnected ant lead at the masthead have to do with anything, since the radio was already kaput? And when in the history of sailing has that ever become disconnected? That is, why did he climb the mast? And if it were disconnected, how did the radio momentarily receive a crystal-clear transmission before dying?

Still, any movie about sailing, is a good movie.

One thing I found odd is when he got his fiberglass patch kit out to fix the hole. He started from the top and worked down and got thinner as he was running low on matting and resin. I believe I would have started from the bottom up making even layers. His fiberglass job looked thick at the top and very thin at the bottom to me.
