Hello,

We have a 2002 Hunter 460 with the original Adler Barbour Fridge and Freezer duo. Our freezer over freezes every 1-2 months. We have read it probably is a seal issue. If it is what do we replace? What part, from what vendor/parts store? I have thawed the Freezer. What setting does this knob in the freezer need to be pointed at? It goes from top right corner to turn clockwise to the top left corner. The actual seal on the lid looks to be in good condition. Please look at pictures and give feedback. What is everyone else doing with their freezer?

thank you!

That knob adjusts the set temperature for the holding/evaporator plate, and thus indirectly the freezer temperature itself. Regardless of where it is set on a freezer plate (unless turned off), you will still experience the icing you are seeing.

The icing problem is caused by moisture getting into the box. Either from a bad seal or penetration, from the food you put in, from the amount you open it, or from wet insulation. Or a combination of these.

On the other hand, I don't think it is unusual for a boat freezer to need defrosting every 2 months. Every month might be rarer, but still within the normal distribution. Routine defrosting is normal maintenance for these, as they don't have the automatic defrosting ability of home freezers.

Thank you Mark.
Anyone reading this with the same issue - I did more digging on what to actually buy to upgrade your freezers insulation.

One member used Electrical Duct Seal - taking this putty and applying it in the crease/Line around the top of the freezer. This is the crease where the freezer meets the counter. Apply this all the way around this crease with the top open. This is not where the gasket seal on the freezer top meets the freezer bottom built into the counter.

THEN - replace the rubber gasket seal on the top. Remove the original one - you can find replacements at Home Depot/ Lowe’s. Multiple members stated do not spend a lot on this. It is simply a rubber gasket seal.
Hope this helps!

I’ll follow up with pictures of our Hunter Freezer shortly, after applying both.

Hi Steve. We have two AB units, fridge and freezer that operate 24/7. The 1991 freezer needs defrosting every couple of years. I replaced the dead 1991 fridge compressor with a new AB unit with a box evaporator about eight years ago that needs defrosting every couple of years as well. Before you start dealing with the problem, run a dollar bill around the seals to determine their sealing condition. I did that when we took possession in 2002 and found the seals wanting. I added another layer of self-adhesive window type seals that fixed the problem.
