What year is the H36 "rythm"? And I like the name(my wife is from Ireland). But is that a typo, $7K for rerigging and painting the mast? I'd sure love to take you up on the sail.

It's a 1981. We chose the name because of the color of the boat (green) and because my wife and I met a local Irish pub called McGuires. It is world famous. No typo. I wouldn't doubt it if the total comes to $10,000.00 for the mast work. I am finally slowing down in my working all the time to finance this boat and slowing down in wotking on it. I hope to contribute more to this website in the future. I appreciate all your time/advice in the posts you have made.

Hello RythmSurfer:

I'm not entirely clear about the work you are having done. Presume the $7k (now $10k ouch) is for renewing all the standing rigging and the mast paint? Boom being done as well?

The mast on my 1980 H36 still looks to be ok and it passed muster from both the surveyor and when the PO had it down plus new standing rigging in 2005.

But it does have a sections of aluminum galvanic corrosion in a few spots.

I will be interested to hear of any hidden problem areas you might find with the mast stepped an inspected.

A nice glossy white mast will be a wonderful visual upgrade to your boat. My white is long in the tooth. I have made do by hand painting up as far as I could reach on a step ladder (safely lashed to the mast) and also I've painted the boom. Above the new paint line the original finish isn't too obnoxious, being farther away from the eye and above the normal line of sight.

Thanks,
rardiH36

I have my booms on the horses in the garage as I type. Nearby lays $100. worth of Perfection paiint and the epoxy primer. Yesterday I power sanded the bad spots and wet sanded the entire staysail boom. Stood there looking and thinking how much easier to just do touch up. Especially I think that when standing next to the mast laying on barrels next to the boat. Sure as I do touchup then someone like "Rythm" will dock next to me. If I just had the time.

More mast work today. I am wondering what the extra "axles" are for on our H37C masts. All these years and I am just now noticing as I was prepping for the epoxy primer. Picture is the back of the mast with two axles. The front has one large one. And you can see that I lost a sheave when I pulled the axle out too far for painting.

Not sure why my mast is such a mess. I know about the bottom six feet, gets scratched being dropped through the partners to the keel. But my mast is all scraped up between the winches and the spreaders.

I had a devil of a time getting the mast turned and into those braces. I am using a scissors jack to lift it while I move the barrels around.

Duh! Of course you are right Bill. What was I thinking? Maybe I am getting too old for this. Well it has been ten years since I last saw the top of my mast. Then the small pin is for the topping lift? I use the spare halyard for the topping lift.

Topping lift needs to be inside backstay. Ask me how I learned that.

Of course it does. Another "duh". So why the smaller pin? I guess my original topping lift used the other side of the big pin. There is nothing else up there to attach to.

I'm intrigued by your "spare halyard" come down inside the mast? 3rd hole to get out? I have jib , staqysail, spinnaker, and main halyards. two holes near the winches on each side.

Hi Bill, I brought the spare halyard out the starboard side, just above the main halyard. There were already three on the port side. In item #51(page 3) you see the picture of the port side. I brought the spinnaker halyard out just above the clutch for the jib. I have also added two large cleats for someplace to hang all that rope.

And stupid me! The other picture there shows the big pin on the front connecting the forestay(actually the solid rod furler). Fortunately that "U" terminal was included in my measurements for the new forestay. If the backstay used the same kind of connector then I am really wondering where the topping lift connected. I don't have that picture.

Backstay does use same U bracket. that's how I got the toppinglift outside the backstay

One more trip to paint. Only the second coat of a 20 foot section left to do. Fifty-two feet of mast painted 10" at a time. Ten inches one side, slide under the mast, ten inches on the other side. Even keeping two-part paint thinned like water you have to work fast. Overlap the last section no more than two or three inches and brush about four inches while dragging lightly. When you finish ten inches then get to the other side before it sets. If you do it right it looks like it was sprayed on.

In the last photo you can see just how deep the wire channel is. There are two 3-wire cables, the VHF coax, and the anemometer cable in there.

Put the mast to bed today. In about three layers of 2 mil plastic. In the picture I just had six feet left to do, the main cabin part. But there is bad news. It rained about two hours after I finished the top 23 feet. It sets fast and I had gone home. Well it did mar the finish, just the top which is the flat section next to the sail track. And a middle section that was painted in the sun looks flat compared to the rest. So come spring one more coat is in order. Then a picture of the old Hyde furler just before I covered the drum and the halyard swivel(four foot to the left).

Or maybe I could lay it on the side deck and sail to Chicago. Friends want to do the Chi-Mac race next year so there I would be. :) Seriously though there is no way to schedule this far in advance. It will go off the rack and onto horses in April. Then one more coat of paint before installing the new rigging and the new furler. The mast goes in the same day as the marina launches the boat. Hopefully by May 1.
