5411 oberdorfer not pumping water

water always seemed to spurt out the exhaust as soon as the engine was started,previous to some starting problems i have encounterd but corrected. My question is how long should it take for water to exit the exhaust. I am afraid to let the engine run for any length of time. Is it possable the thermostat is stuck closed. I removed the front plate from the pump, impeller looks fine and raw water has no problem reaching the pump. Second question can someone explain how the water and exhaust mix and how the plumbing in the back of the engine works in this regard. Thanks...Lenny

Exhaust water

There are a number of things you should check. The water should start flowing in about 5 - 20 seconds, if not sooner.The thermostat really doesn't have anything to do with exhaust water. You may see what looks like a two inchwater pipe with a smaller pipe going into that two inch pipe. That is the mixing elbow. Take the water hose off and see if the pump is pumping water.Take the cover off the water pumg and check the impeller. If any of the fins are broken off, are they in the pump or stuck some place in the exhaust/water line to the exhaust. If the impeller is OK, then check the mixing elbow. It could be stopped up with something. Good luck.

water problem

LOS....Should take no more than 10 seconds for water to flow....don't forget the obvious....intake....could something (seaweed, grass, plastic bag, etc) have been sucked up into the system?????? Take the hose off the intake (after you close the valve) and put it into a bucket of water. It should suck right thru...If not, well???? Let us know how you make out....DAVE

How the water and exhaust mix

If you have a wet exhaust system the raw water goes into the exhaust just past the engine exhaust. It enters a water lift muffler which is below the exhaust pipe. The exhaust will exist the the muffler. After a short period of time the muffler will fill with water and block the exhaust opening. The exhaust pressure will blow the water out and clear the exhaust, and the whole process starts over agin.

Do all the recommended verifications to the whole cooling system starting at the inlet strainer, but FYI the thermostat will open gradually until the engine reaches working temperature, so you will hear the water bubbling inside the exhaust, but non will come out until the thermostat opens.
