I think their story is full of shit, but I'm really opposed to this type of gender shaming.

Do you guys have daughters? Wives or SOs?? If these were guys, would you be commenting on their looks???
And I figured I’d get called out for shaming Taiwanese fishermen. Who knew...

I found this full video interesting, cross posting from the other thread on this.

A few noteworthy excerpts:

33:37 She brought a Geiger counter to document readings that were caused by Fukishima.

- This makes me think that it was no accident that she ended up off of Japan.

34:15 "had flying fish & squid landing on the deck. If we would have eaten them, we would have been fine. We threw them back."

- First of all, they didn't eat the available fish? Really? I could make a number of comments. Second, I have seen flying fish land on a boat if it was lit up at night. I have never seen squid land on a boat. Has anyone else had squid just land on their boat?

I reserved any comment when the story broke because I noticed something fishy right away; first stories I saw on Goggle News feed all mentioned engine problems and 'broken mast', but the pictures show an intact mast.... hmmm.
So, after more information comes out, we now know it was a spreader that broke but no pics are close enough or detailed enough to show the damage. What exactly happened to the engine? We still don't know. My best guess is poor maintenance, water in the fuel, or water flooding the exhaust manifold from following seas going up an incorrectly installed or owner modified exhaust system... Either way, the girls obviously didn't have the know how to fix the engine... I think this can and has happened to many sailors, but they still end up sailing home so we never hear about it. Not being able to fix a broken spreader (that didn't take the rig down when it failed) is probably the greatest indictment of their lack of skills. There are lots of things on a sailboat that I could replace a spreader with, but what is REALLY GREAT is having a SPARE. I mean seriously, they had enough SPARE FOOD for sure.
So know we are learning about the EPIRB that was never activated, and the reason why she didn't (adrift, but not in immediate life-threatening danger). To be frank, I actually believe her on this one point, BUT I would word it a bit differently. I actually believe she was afraid being slapped with a massive rescue services bill had she lit off that EPIRB... seriously. Our society has become so litigious that I think, even if it wouldn't actually happen, people are least convinced in their own minds that it is likely they can billed and their insurance won't cover it. I think we she was too scared to light off the beacon and believed as long as they weren't starving they would eventually pick up a ride.
Now the above is just a likely explanation to the beacon kink in the story. Still, overall I think the whole tale is still fishy. Judging by the 'Reality TV' world we live in and how desperate people are for their 15 minutes, I will just not be surprised at all to see this proven as a staged incident. I am also not surprised at all if a TV Movie, Book deal, and Talk Show circuit appearances are all already in the works. Do they have a publicist yet? I bet their voicemails and email boxes are overflowing.

I'm not arguing but just how do you stage being stranded at sea 900 miles from Japan? I'm willing to believe that people are desperate enough for attention to do it. But I don't see how this could be done without enough assistance to have someone leak out some info. I'm listening.

Well, the evidence indicates Jennifer was on “Denny’s Boat” in 2010. Who is Denny, and is the same boat? I’m in possible agreement with a staged publicity stunt from Butch Pussidy and Sun Pants Kid!

Back in the late 90's I had to do some work with a satellite company in Australia. One of its employees was one of the crew on the TV show Survivor. The show was finished as far as filming but was just being run on TV. He knew who the winner was but had to sign a NDA under pain of death (kidding) not to reveal the outcome. Now, how did they get on the boat?

As I mentioned before, they could have been dropped off with a few days worth of vittles and water. Enough for the "rescue" to take place. Who could have done it? Why, the Taiwanese boat that "found" them. I know this is all a conspiracy theory, but it only makes sense. Why? Because as mentioned before, they are too healthy (and so are the dogs) for being adrift for 150 days. And... the boat (other than the growth on the side) is not battered like a boat that would have been tossed around in Force 11 gales (as she stated).

I too am calling foul here. Like I said also, this day and age it is hard to pull the wool over ones eyes. The truth will be known before the book, movie, and TV appearance shows. The dark haired girl will spill the beans.

I think I may have this figured out. My theory:

They actually got to Tahiti without incident...remember the radio conversation with a vessel named Sea Nymph and the USN or USCG (would our CG be in Tahiti??) in which the vessel reported it was fine and expected to make land by morning?)... spent a couple of months playing around in the South Pacific and then headed home. It was during that leg of the trip that they made up their story.About 1,5000 miles from Japan, it was time to starting acting out their little scheme.... they started sending up flares when they were sure no other vessel was close enough to see 'em.... may have even managed to damage the spreader on purpose. It's not hard to disable an engine if you try, but they had to wait till they were in shipping lanes to do that to make sure they'd be "rescued." And after about a week and 500-600 miles more, they were. We all know the rest.

Why do we keep referring to their story as “smelling fishy?” Why denegrate the poor fish? Can’t we just say their story seems suspect?

Are there fee's to dock in Tahiti? Wouldn't you have to register with customs, if they made landfall anywhere?

It feels like Tasha Fuiava is hardly mentioned and there are so few quotes from her because maybe she feels just a bit uncomfortable with the whole affair.
If these were guys, would you be commenting on their looks???
You are right to point out the crudeness of such statements about her looks however, it is the context of Jennifer Appel's life that likely made those comments, not her gender. So, the answer is yes, if a guy, with an actor's bio and a series of photos that made it look like he thought of himself as another Fabian and was obviously looking to promote his career through deception, comments about his looks would probably be forthcoming. The references to the woman's looks are clearly outside the intent of this forum about sailing but, I didn't see those comments as motivated by gender bias, only their form.
