Thanks Don, this is very helpful. I like the wrap around type best too and AB seems like the popular choice from all forums I've been reading.

Quick Survey;

Do you have a replacement system or original: original in freezer, "new" added in refrig
What manufacturer if replaced and what models of both evap and compressor: both AB
Is your evaporator a box type, a wrap around your entire freezer section or a plate: both wrap around
If it is a box type evap, how does this work for you? does it give you enough room to freeze provisions for most trips?:
If it is a box type does it keep the freezer cold enough to slowly thaw frozen meat? How long does it stay frozen?:
Did you install the replacement or have a pro do it?: pro
Are you happy with it, what changes would you make?: very happy ... both have worked well for 13 years

I am in need of a replacement system and need some advice from other Hunter 410 owners.

Thanks
I believe 410 and 420 refrig/freezer systems were the same

Probably are if the models are the same year (I don't know this for a fact). But the system on a 1998 410 and 2001 410 aren't the same near as I can tell.

I'm never had a problem with my system, but in research the most common complaint on I found on the 410s was the refrigerator.

Re: Fan direction and blocks of ice

I'm planning on replacing the block ice with 3 or 4 large plastic containers frozen with ice. I'm hoping it extends my defrost cycle. I also take a long fillet type knife and "shave" the freezer plates with the frost dropping into the bottom of the freezer. It allows the plates to cool better and keeps the airway more clear for the spill over fan to work. I can usually get about 8-10 days between defrosting this way.

It seems that the spill over fan in my refrigerator only runs when the compressor runs (which runs off the freezer temperature). So the temperature in the refrigerator increase and goes though big swings.

Is this how others 410 spill over fan operates as I would think that the fan should run independent of the compressor.
Since it was pouring rain the other day I finally got back to this question of the spillover fan. Mine was definitely only running when the compressor ran and this was resulting in the temperature getting to 40 or so sometimes.

I found that the power for the spill over fan was wired to a separate terminal on the compressor power strip. Now on the AB manual electrical drawing this terminal showed a fan. But it was for a power duct fan and said "not for spillover fan". So I took that wire off, turned the freezer thermostat down to keep the compressor off, and ran a jumper to the wire and the fan ran. So I moved that wire over to the main power feed so it has power anytime the breaker is closed.

Looking at some notes in the AB info in my owners manual makes me think the last owner replaced the control unit and I bet he wired the fan wrong afterwards.

Now my problem is that the frig is too cold and I keep adjusting the thermostat setting.

Hi Folks, I don't want to hijack this thread and will create a new post if you ant, but I thought you guys might be of assistance. My old compressor went Caputo (sp?). It was a water cooled only, no fan. I replaced the plates and compressor with an air and water cooled compressor, but, I had some issues getting the water lines to match up (copper tubing on the compressor and 1/2" hose to the pump made for some crazy adaptors). Anyway, I ran out of time trying to put it all together but was running it on fan cooling only. The guy I bought it from said in the Chesapeake Bay area fan cooling would be plenty, but I said since I had the pump and through hull anyway I might as well use it. Well, now it's been several days and I'm pretty happy with the fan only mode and am thinking it's not worth the extra power to run the water pump.

Anyone have an air only cooled compressor in the Annapolis? Baltimore area and are you happy with that? Anyone run into problems in late July when the temps are 100?

Thanks

Mine is air only and has been fine up in the Boston area (never had the water cooled unit on my 410). It got pretty hot for a while last year and the freezer stayed frozen (the frig too since back then the spill over fan would run if the freezer). Yes it ran longer with shorter off periods, but worked fine.

It would surprise me to learn that running the unit longer without a water pump would in the end be less total power draw than shorter with the water pump.

Good point Don, I was assuming the air cooling would run all the time and forgot it cycled off. My old setup with the water pump only never really cooled the freezer well so it ran all the time, I'm sure the new setup will cycle more. Now I have to rethink using the water pump as it may actually save power :)

I think mistyped my reply.

I think the air cooled unit running longer will use LESS power than running the unit for shorter period but also running a water pump.
