How do you compute the amount of line you need for each halyard without removing what's already on there?

I need to replace mine, and I'm not sure how much to buy of each.

Good Question. You measure the length of the expected run and add a couple of feet. Then you tie the new to the old. Hoist the new up and down replacing the old with new. Run it to the mast or run to the cockpit if so configured. If too much is left trip the line, whip the end for a salty look and grab your favorite beverage. Easy Peasy...

What to do with the extra line.... I have never been on a boat that had too much line.
There are 1000 plus uses. Tie up dinghy, tie up sail, tie up unsavory crew to the mast etc...

By measure.... The height of you mast from the deck to the mast head time 2 (one length up and one length down), plus any run from the mast base to the cockpit if you had your lines running there, plus a few feet of slop to have in the cockpit.

They say there are no small or foolish questions.

And I want to believe them... who or whom ever they are.

Yes, don't worry about getting too much, somehow when I replaced mine they ended up just long enough to be usable and I would like to have a couple feet more. Something got lost between me and my wife and the person who cut the line for her at the store.

Or you can use a rigging calculator to get a real good estimate
https://shop.hunterowners.com/cu/detail-rrc.php
How accurate is that calculator?

And while I'm thinking about it, the Halyards are what lifts the sails, and the "sheets" are what hold the third point of the sail to the cockpit, correct? And since the sheet lines don't have to go up the mast, they should be significantly shorter, correct?

The sheets hold the "Third Point" the clew of the sail
The sheets attach to the clew. You have the distance from the clew too the cockpit plus some t9 hang on to. And the distance from the starboard side clew location around the front of the mast and back to the port side clew location. This usually is about the length of the boat. Times 2. You can get a more accurate measurement or you can use the boat length times 2 and trim any extra when you take it out for a sail.

The running rigging chart is dated 2004. I don't think it is for a Hunter 27 Cherubini.

Look at the rigging layout is it that dissimilar not to use it as a guide?

And if you follow the link and see what you can find you just may find what you are looking for sure beats having no direction at all!
