They should have one off the shelf. I have ordered many parts for our 1980 23' Oday and they have all matched perfectly. You can find the part listed online however I would call them to make sure the center board listed will fit your boat.

Call Instead

From what others have stated on this forum Rudy does not answer e-mails promptly if at all. Better off giving him a call, they really are great to deal with, just not on e-mail.

Re: Call Instead

I've had some luck with emails to Rudy. Usually when it's something that wasn't too important. I've had some emails bounce back from a full mailbox, but he's much better to call, especially on something like this.

If you go to D&R Marine web site you will see parts listing for your boat and the swing keel. On my boat there two wear pieces on each side to guide the keel. maybe you have the same and you may need to remove them to get it free up! I save been with a hammer and long cheisel and chip away all the rust in that area from the cast iron keel and then took a small sand blaster to it.

Oday 23 -
I have same boat. Mine was that way many years ago. Took it out and made a skinnier one, but now that one does not fit, so took it out. I have sailed many years without the board and it does not make that much difference. The CB is nice for weather helm and heavy seas-but now I just take it easier.

Thanks .

The more I rescearch that Oday iron keel/center board the more Im finding out the problem never goes away.
The center board slot in the iron keel being unprotected from the salt water will constently rust/expand and jam the center board.
I read about an early 70s Oday 25 iron keel ( same problem as the 23) where it was turned in a fixed keel by the attachemnt of lead bulb type keel to the iron keel adding what looked like 6 to 8" to the over all draft.
Any one ever heard of this approach?? design specs for this modifaction??
I'll let you know how I make out.

If you find out more information on to a fix keel, please let me know. i'm going to be in fresh and salt water with the boat and up state NY is getting tough on inspecting boat. That swing keel with it hiding place could be a big problem.

O'DAY 25 never had the cast-iron keel, that must have been a integral fiberglass keel. I think I saw that boat on eBay. The O'DAY 25 was built between 1975 and 1983, keel was molded as part of hull, ballast was lead ingots set inside the keel molding, CB was lightly ballasted (15# +/- of lead flashing). The fin-keel 25 must have used a different hull mold, and had a bolted-on lead fin keel.
Oh, and lets make one correction, O'Day NEVER built a "swing-keel" boat, they built centerboard boats (ex: Widgeon, Javelin, Day Sailer, Mariner), they built Keel/Centerboard boats (ex: 192, 20, 23, 25), and they built Fixed keel boats (ex: 27, 28, 272, 240). What retracts into the keel on a K/CB boat is a centerboard, a "swing-keel" is a HEAVY, ballasted fin that can be retracted like a centerboard and usually contains all of the ballast. A Catalina 22 is a swing-keel, the Macgregor/Venture 17, 21, 22, 25 would be a swing-keel. O'Day went big into preaching the advantages of their K/CB boats over the popular swing-keel designs of their competition (they also admitted the disadvantages....but barely!)

where did the 25 ft O-day come from, it a 1974 O'day 23' with a cast iron keel
Franknj mentioned having read about someone who removed the centerboard from a 25 and then deepened the keel, he thought the early 25s had an iron keel but that was only the 1971-74 O'DAY 23, not the 25.
I was just pointing out that the boat in question (ie: the one Franknj mentioned) had a fiberglass keel not cast iron.

I have a 73 oday 23 the the keel is iron and bolted on ceter board jamed in the slot of this keel.
The keel did have some fiberglass fairing compond on it but by no means was there any evidenance that this iron keel was fiberglassed over completely to make the iron ballast of on the inside of the boat

before buying the 23 I had looked at a couple of 25's either missing or having a CB stuck the vowner of one of these boats thaought the keel/CB trunk was iron.
the more Ive look into this keel CB with the earlys 70 23s and 25 the more you here about this CB problem.

One of the guys on this forum had the same problem with a 1973 O'Day 23 just this past summer. He wound up making a new centerboard for his boat and painting the cast iron keel with this special paint. The boat was in horrific shape when he got it, but when he finally finished working on it, it came out looking beautiful. He goes under the name of Bay Sailor Bill, and I was hoping that he would chime in on this subject. Here's his Blog. Check it out.

Good morning, spring is here i hope. Started to work on the boat and scraping paint, remove wiring and rusted parts. I have came back to the keel and what to do with it. It has alot of rust inside and would like to remove it before new centerboard go in. What do you think about unbolting the keel from the boat and working on to it that way? By doing this i will be able to reseal the joint. So has any one done this or have any through about this?
