Help! Rotted wood in 1982 javelin - structural or aesthetic issue?

    Metal rust, Wood rot

I can fix metal rust by sanding and painting with rust converter. Is there something similar to metal for wood? I've some area in wood that was water soaked and weathered. I can dry it but is there any chemical/paint I can use to seal it to so it won't soak in water and rot or deteriorate further?
