a small stainless steel wire brush like welders use is great for cleaning and removing old caulking.... never use a regular steel wire brush, stainless only.

silicone is good stuff, but only if the surface is prepared for it. still, there is better stuff to use than silicone

very ugly.... and even with three layers applied by differt people, it STILL leaked.... go figure! I found three layers that i could positivly identify, there were possibly more.... a shoe goo type stuff on top, silicone under it but on top of the fairing plate, and the original stuff under the plate.
