O'Day 19 19 Cape Cod
Hello,
I have a new-to-me O'Day 19 (not the Rhodes) that I need a motor for. The old one was a 1075 Johnson 6 HP which never ran right, so I don't know if it was the right size. It was also a 2 stroke.

I am looking at purchasing a Tohatsu 4 stroke motor new (unless I hear otherwise) but don't know what horse power to get. I sail on Cape Cod Bay where tide currents can be strong and winds can be too. The O'Day weighs 1350 lbs empty, but with full load would be up around 2200 lbs. It could weigh more if there are more than 4 people.

I am thinking of getting a 5 hp, as I like the external gas tank, but wondered if that seems appropriate. Do I have to be concerned about the motor mount? The motors weigh just under 60 lbs. I think the Johnson weighed just under 50 lbs.

I searched the archives, but only found information for larger O'days.

Thanks

Steve

Steve,
I'd go with the Tohatsu 5 hp four stroke outboard but make sure you have an engine bracket that will take a four stroke outboard. Although some new four stroke outboards can weigh less than the 2 strokes, it's the enormous engine torque in these outboards that can cause damage to a older engine brackets and also to the transom.
A few years ago, a guy who had a four stroke outboard on an old engine bracket on his O'Day 25 was out one day on his boat with his family. When he went to start the engine he threw it in gear and accidentally accelerated it too high and the torque from the engine stoved the transom in. Luckily the large hole in the transom was above the waterline. Oddly enough, the engine bracket sustained no damage whatsoever, but his boat had a large hole in the transom.
I'm using a 1999 Johnson 8 hp long shaft two stroke on my 1986 O'Day 222 and I love this engine. It's mounted to my transom on the original bracket that came with my boat and the bracket is mounted on a block on the transom which allows me the space between the engine and the transom to tilt the engine up without having to mess with the bracket tilt.

If you need a heavy duty bracket for your boat, check with Rudy at D&R Marine in Assonet. http://www.drmarine.com/
He carries an engine bracket that is as strong as the higher priced Gorelick brackets for a reasonable price.

Thanks for the suggestion and the warning. I will investigate this for my boat... both the bracket and the transom strength. I would prefer not having a sad story to tell.

My pleasure! If you need a block for your transom, you would probably need to build one out of fiberglass. As far as I know, they aren't available anywhere.

That's a good thing to keep in mind about those Tohatsu outboards. My friend bought a new 9.9 Tohatsu long shaft outboard last year for his Seaward 22 and it runs beautiful. You can hardly hear it running.

Interesting... I had no idea the motors were the same. Looking up the specs I see that is true. The 5 HP comes with the external tank, the 4 does not. So it looks like the 5 is the way to go for me. Thanks.

I've been told that the old Johnson 9.9 and 15 hp outboards were the same engine with different carburetors.

I bet the 9.9 is quieter than the smaller hp engines. The 9.9 are two cylinder and the 5 hp is one cylinder. I shall see. I ordered a 5 hp.

The new Tohatsu 9.9 that my friend has on his Seaward 22 is very quiet. It has an electric start and the charging system for the battery. It shoots out a pretty good stream of water out the back of that engine cover too.

You will have more than enough power with 5HP on your 19. I had an old 5 HP Johnson pushing our 24' Columbia (Full Keel) and it was fine... We are presently pushing our 22' ODay with a 1973 6HP Johnson without any issues... Enjoy your boat and only use the Aux Power when Needed - ;o)

I will get to try it out on Monday. Where I moor, has a very narrow and shallow channel during low tide and the wind comes directly out of the harbor usually, so that is when I need it, besides when there is no wind.

Sounds like Arey's Pond! Once the biggest O'Day dealer in the area.

OOPS! I missed the part where you mentioned being on Cape Cod Bay, so I guess that wouldn't be Arey's Pond, since they are on Pleasant Bay! But there are a lot of great shallow areas of CC Bay to explore in a centerboard boat! A few harbors are fine once you are in.... but forget about arriving or leaving at low tide!
