The folks that own the small marina where I keep my boat have a few cats and one or two of them have taken to sleeping on top of mainsail cover and my sunbrella cover over my sliding hatch. The cat hair is not too much of a bother but as I am getting ready to do some topside sanding and painting, is there any non lethal way to discourage them from sleeping on my boat?

Why don't you speak to the owners and ask them to solve the issue?

There are some sprays that will repel a cat or dog from furniture and places where you don't want them. But I would think the marina owners should be responsible for the issue.

If you can catch them sleeping then a piece of 3/4 inch pvc pipe about four feet long makes a great blow gun and big sloppy spit balls will chase them away and they will spend the rest of the day licking the spit off their fur. I know because I have done it after everything else I tried failed.

Get the spray and see if it does the job. Cats live in their own world and do what they want. This is not like a dog that may be half human. Cats are free to roam, so how are you going to make them stay off the boat?

There are also those zap pads that you can put down that give them a little electrical tingle when they touch them.

Have the owners of the cats speak to them.

Really though I don't think it's the owners problem(legally). But local ordinances vary. Where I am cats may roam free but dogs must be on leashes or fenced in. I would put some spray on it to repel them. You will probably only have to do it once. They'll get used to not going there and that will be the end of it.

We have a live aboard in our marina who has a very friendly cat. He visits everyone and all the boats except one. One that one he was drop kicked off one time and since then has had occasion to us that boat as a bathroom since then. Cats do remember, so a spray that they find unpleasant may be better than the piece of PVC pipe.

cats are trainable, just like men.
if you show the cats the boat is your territory, they will remain away. i use vinegar in a spray bottle. it wont kill the cats or make them sick. it repels them --also make noises-- when i show cats my territory, i hiss at them and spray the vinegar towards them on the dock and boat. it does work. every time you see the cats near your stuff, hiss and spray. they WILL leave you alone. the vinegar will stay on the dock long enough to remind the cats not to go there.

There was a cat that dicided she liked me and I didn't much like her but she would not be discouraged. She learn quickly the range of my spray bottle and would retreat just out of range. but those big sloppy spit balls took the message home to her. I didn't want to harm her but I also didn't want her shredding my screen door.

RPWilla, the pipe and the cat never come into contact. If I was to wish a cat harm I would kill it outright but I would never injure it.

zee-you sure have lots of uses for vinegar!
my great grandmother and others before me had sooo many more uses for it-- my uncle had an apple farm-- much cider--turns--wow vinegar--use it for everything!!! i use the white for cleaning and treating water tanks that smell old and stale, hair rinse, soap remover, many many uses..removes salt build up--kindlier than is muriatic acid.....
\cider vinegar is good for salad dressings, cleaning, anything white is good for, but has a flavor to it so is better for coooking. cider vinegar is essentially a food, whereas white is a tool /chemical for cleaning and is harsher than food vinegars.

i try to be a polite dock renter when i rarely attend that function--docking overnite-- bubba isnt fond of docks as he is on tether while we are at the docks. i donot allow him to run any docks.

rickl....awesome black beauty!!!!

Zee,
Thank you for being a responsible cat owner. You have my respect.
(bows)i plan on keeping my kat for a few more years---is easier when they know where their own home and family are --they are victims of kat ADD and get so lost so quick..s my kat is perfect, i dont plan on training another --dont want him run over-- had that already with another kitty--that was tragic...any kat that walks on leash and fetches and catches and guards home is a wonderful critter-- i have that.....i respect my critter enough to keep him safe.

I guess that I have had a dozen cats over the years as long as I diidin't move they always found their way home. One cat that I had always went out when we went to bed and I learned some time later that he always slept with my next door neighbor. He was always home when I got up each morning. He would come in and eat a little and go back out to catch a mouse and bring that home and eat it on the porch.

Will give vinegar a try first. Thanks all for the advice. frank
instructions for vinegar spray--- act like a cat, first off-- that me3ans, look cat in the eye and d o not look away. y6o do, you lose-- keep eye contct, hiss, spray all at one time.. FOLLOW CAT-- MAKE CAT LEAVE YOUR TERRITORY. YOU WIN. CAT BE GONE. make sure cat stays gone--might need to do this mebbe 2 more times, max, depending on how dumb is cat, or how determined. have fun. it does work.

Rule number 1. you gotta be smarter than a cat.
Rule number 2. that may be harder than you think.

My wife has been hissing at me and spraying vinegar at me when ever I leave the toilet seat up. I wondered what was going on.

You could just drink a six pack and mark your territory in the same manner as the cats do.
