Lynn and I just got home from our weekend. We sailed out to Hog Island about four hours ahead of a thunder storm. This was our first time in the boat during a storm.
I had chosen my anchorage on the lee side of the island, set my anchor by dropping it and then backing away until it caught. Then began to cook. The storm blew in (40% chance became 100% fact) and the wind of course changed 180 degrees. Thank goodness the anchor held. Sheer dumb luck that i didn't anchor closer to the shore otherwise would have swung around into the shore when the wind shifted. Biggest wind we have been in to date. We were worried about lightening. I ran my anchor chain (spare anchor) from the rear stay across the motor and into the water to try to give the lightening a little ground, and mainly to make me feel batter. All in all a pretty good experience. Sailed back under pleasent winds and the whole club (who new of our predicament because i was on the phone with them when the storm hit telling them to come get me if i wasn't back by dark-30) came out to meet us and cheered us in. It was a pretty nice bit of landing coasting into my slip wing on wing with the last whisper of breeze. Again sheer dumb luck.

Below is a my favorite picture of the storm. We didn't think to take pics till it was over, and only had our cell phone camera. But here it is anyway. This is just as the storm is blowing out, the white caps are gone. you can see how close out stern is to the shore. Notice how the flag is flying dead astern. Lightening was booming every few seconds. I think i consumed about a quarter of that bottle. Lynn was a champ and hung in there.

P.S. I think penelope moons us because we deserve it.

Happy Memorial day.
I remember the first squall I went through while anchored near Chappaquiddick Island in Edgar town Martha's Vineyard. I sat in the cockpit near the outboard with my oilskins on, wearing my big yellow Sou'wester rain hat looking like an idiot while my wife and youngest boy were peeking out at me from the partially closed cabin. The storm only lasted about 5 minutes. Then there was the time we anchored outside of Menemsha for the night. I didn't dare to go through that narrow passage into the pond so we stayed out there all night on the hook and suffered a bumpy night. My son puked in my hat! You had to be there. :D A good majority of the anchorages and favorite coves that I frequent now are shallow and have great holding ground. I no longer worry about slipping my anchor. If a storm comes up while I'm at anchor, I just sleep right through it. If your boat should ever slip the anchor, you'll know it. Believe me. I'm always a bit uneasy anchored near a lee shore like I was Wednesday night when it was blowing like crazy out of the North, but my Fortress anchor held real well. Have a great Memorial Day guys.

Looks a little familier, we had a boat on Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo, great catfish lake, not very big though.

Not a great shot of the boat, but...

I love the color in this photo. This was during Bayfield Raceweek 2009. Overcast days make for great photo opportunities with bright colors.

Here is a picture of my three girls up on the bow of DayDreamer (O'day 25) on the first sail on Lake Ontario this season. You can see the new CDI FF4 furler behind them, the sail hadn't arrived yet. The picture of my kids on the port rail of DayDreamer during last season's first sail ended up in the March issue of Good Old Boat. . .

I got a friend to buy a sailboat. Today we both had our boats out. Light winds and mostly just the kids jumping off the bow and swimming to the swim ladder and doing it all over again. Seriously fun day, but very light on the actual sailing. My friend is completely stoked with his Venture 222. It is really nice having a friend helplessly getting sucked into our addiction... buwahahahahaha buwahahahahahahah!

My wife snapped a picture of my obsessive compulsive disorder kicking in. I could not take his halyard line laying over his side stay so I had to get it set on the mast before we got underway.

thanks for the heads up on the painting... mlight have to order a canvas print as a christmas present to ourselves this year. When you say "forboding of things to come," I dunno... NC to Texas is a long way to trailer a boat :) On the other hand if you are tiring of NC, I can certainly recommend Texas. Active sailing community here and you can sail year round. Canyon Lake is a nice moderate sized lake to sail which is local for me. There's also Travis up by Austin, the large Buchanan an hour or so east. Then there are Amistad, Conroe; Cedar Creek Reservoir and Tawakoni up near Dallas, and Texoma on the Oklahoma border. Then of course there are the bays and the gulf itself... although these days you may need Goo-gone after you're done :-(

Good Picture montana, now my turn:
Last night, down here in alabama, i drifted over to a little cove just down from my marina. It took about a thousand turns of the screw to get there since there weren't no wind. When i got there, I dropped my anchor through 12 feet of murky water to the mud bottom. Once the line went slack I shifted the little 9 hp nissan to back'ards and set the anchor good'n tight. That was in case a thunder boomer blew in. After that i tossed a couple ofcountry cured (translation salty as hell ) 2 inch thick pork chops on the grill and while they were cookin' i shot this picture.....I spent a beautiful night at hook with nothing but the minows to keep me up.

Great picture, nice looking boat. What size headsail are you running in this picture, and are you reefed on the main? I'm still working on a comfortable sail plan for 20kts or so. Why aren't there whitecaps- we always have very prominent whitecaps on Lake Ontario when we get around 20kts. . .
