I am planning a get away on the boat in late June or early July into the heart of no see-um territory. Right when they are at their most hungered stage and human flesh is on the menu. What screen mesh works but still allows air flow?

Try some 20 x 20 per square inch screening. Its about as fine a mesh as you can get You can buy it in rolls at your local friendly Home Depot (cheap). With the plastic screening a nd some yankee ingenuity you can probably make a weighted screen that would cover the companioway opening too.

Just remember, the no-seeums screens will really cut down on the ventilation.

I will use them while at dock with air conditioning running and remove them when out sailing for the day. I figure the AC will push some air. If I needed to, I could run the AC with the generator on anchor.

So why would you have hatches, ports, etc. open if you have the air conditioning running?

Don't know if they manufacture screens for no-seeums as it may seem the resulting lack of ventilation may prove counter productive. If you have A/C perhaps a set of plastic covered screens may let light in while keeping the bugs out.

no-see-um screen is about all you find in south Florida. But as was said earlier, it is a very fine screen and can reduce ventilation considerably. Chuck

I figure I am going to need the screen over the AC area and the camponway door even when in does not seal up all the way. I just have a $99 window unit. I was not planning on having the ports or hatches open, but on my boat I can see that those little vampire flies will get in around those areas.

A question about your a/c

Dave: I'm curious about your "$99 window unit". I've been looking into getting A/C but I can't figure out how to use a window unit. Where are you placing this on your boat? The units I've looked at don't seem to fit anywhere. The only one that I've seen that does work is the one that fits on the hatch. What type of A/C (brand?) are you using?

Most of the adaptations I've seen have the A/C unit in the companionway. A few will have it on the cabintop with a more elaborate mount and ducting to get the air in and out of the cabin properly. The companionway mount is usually far simpler and easier to implement, but makes getting in and out of the cabin much more difficult.

I made some screens using the extruded tubing, corner pieces, and the raw screen you can get at Home depot. The resulting screen slides right in where my companionway boards go and then I close the top slider and I have a nice screen door to keep out the bugs. Not sure the mesh but it works on no see ums, so does OFF but I hate using chemicals on my body. I made another screen that fits over my hatch opening but I have to take the hatch off the bracket that holds it open, then it just sits flat on top using the same materials from the hardware store. Even though my companionway is angles slightly on the sides there is enough give in the material to allow the angles to work. You will also need the rubber piece that holds the screen to the extrusion and the little roller that pushes it into the groove.

Screening the dodger can be effective, and still maintain ventilation and access.

Yes, any screen slows the air down. Nuff said. The bigger the screens the better.

In order to maximize airflow, we screened from the the dodger down to the top of the companionway door. This gives us a lot more air flow than depending on the windows, and it doesn't require an anoying screen over the door.

Perhaps this is a one-boat solution, but I thought I would share it. We did not use the finest screen; it is about 20x20, as a number of commenters have suggested. The really fine stuff is generally seen on tents and out-doors stores generally have it.

The best protection from no-see-ums is to anchor out from shore, but at the marina you may just have to suck it up.

I am taking the windows out of a broken, barely used, cheap tent to re-screen the ports on my H27. Does any one have a suggestion on what type of glue to use for this screen to plastic frame application? I'm using the method of stapling the screen to a piece of plywood (pulling it tight to reduce wrinkles), sliding the frames underneath, gluing the screen to the frames, and then cutting off the excess after the glue is dried.

It depends. What kind of plastic are you using for the frames. Some plastics work well with adhesives, others are almost impossible to glue. PVC would be a good example of the first, and starboard a good example of the latter.

I used Seth Dixon's idea and his step by step photos. He had such a good idea for an O'Day 25, I had to copy it all. These are his photos.

I have had it in the compainway before as a quick fix but as SD said it is a pain to get in and out. Also by having it in the forward hatch it allows me to run the generator in the cockpit with very little chance of the AC unit sucking in fumes. The hatch works well to direct the air into the cabin. I will get the brand name for you. It was the wal mart special with a remote.

If it was a Walmart Special it might be a Samsung or Haier.
