Any owners out there ever managed to remove the first safety rail stanchion forward of the pushpit stanchion ? I`m getting leaks into the heads and kitchen wall lockers on both sides visible directly underneath this stanchion. These leaks were once just an irritation but the level of leak from this winter`s rain is now causing a real problem ( even though the stanchions were actually covered with a boom tarpaulin from November to March)

The internal glassfibre roof cladding totally prohibits even finger access so I`m left conteplating cutting sections of this sturcture away to allow a socket tool into the nuts.

Seems a bit drastic but I can`t see any other way.

I was also wondering that although the water might be entering from where the bolts come through the outer hull maybe the water is getting through the hull from a different place and then only becoming visible at this point ?

Any ideas --------- or better still ----------- any successful solutions ?

Just thought that 28 owners might like to see what lay behind the wooden slats at the back of the galley shelves ? Loads of rotten wet wood !!

Eventually I have had to resort to a major strip-out of the galley shelves to gain access to the bolts of the mid-stanchion. I can see the two nuts holding the front rail of the mid-stanchion albeit I still can`t get a socket onto them. It may just be possible to hold a nut with an open-ended spanner whilst someone-else turns the bolt from outside --------- we`ll see what comes of it in due course. The washers beneath the nuts are captive between the two layers of the outside hull and the inner white skin visible in one of the photos.

Once I get the stanchions off I intend to refit with a hardish rubber gasket between the stanchion bracket and the deck ----- plus a sealant.

It is difficult to get to that nut. Take a wood chisel and chisel out around the bolt enough to get a socket around it. Use the mirror in the head to see up in the slot. It takes 2 persons one on the outside and one down below to remove/install the stanchion. Use 3m 4800 liberaly to seal the wood/fiberglass hole and under the stanchion to seal. Snug up the bolt, but don't tighten the bolt until after the sealant is cured so it does not squish out of the hole. I have had great success with this process. It also takes about 4-6 hrs to complete this job.

The pics show above the galley cabinet using the mirror from the head.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jerry

I`ve studied the two photos ------- I can see the two bolts which are presumably the forward fastenings but did you also manage to get at the rear nut ? It`s quite large compared to these two ! I assumed that I shall need to cut a section out of the inner skin of the two hulls to get some sort of access to this nut.

If you`ve managed it how did you do it ?
