Check out Sailrite

Check out the sailrite website. They have precut kits for sail covers. If nothing else you can spec what they are using.

9.5 oz. per yard and 11 oz. per yard seem to be popular weights.
zeehag-how many yards were on that 48" wide roll for $500?

We use 9.2 ounce Marine Sunbrella for all of the canvas covers here.

Thank you Dave. I am sure your main sail covers look a lot better than the one I am going to attempt to make.

I have a ratty main sail cover for a pattern. I wouldn't attempt this project with out it.

I won't have a head sail because my furler is trashed, so I need to make a cover with out holes in it for the main so I can at least motor sail this summer.

if you buy a full bolt , there will be enough for the rest of your boat and some left over----so i was told about my ericson 35--i had dodger and covers made and was spozed to have enough for more work.....long story as to why i dont lol...if you only wish to make a main cover, there are kits from sailrite and in some places there are canvas shops that have surplus already made covers for cheeper than able to be made by self....depending on you rlocation...i know there is that option in san diego.......

The prices on sailrite aren't much less than what you can get a finished one ready to go on your boat from the store on here.

By the way how long is a bolt?

Hermit, I noticed that with sailrite also. Not that it's a bad deal but when I was looking for a Bimini there price for a kit was close enough to a finished price that I just bought a finished bimini some place else. Like you, I will be doing a Main cover over the winter. Ours is pretty shabby but will be using it as a pattern. To help with the learning curve I am now making some Hatch screens.
First one looks ok, hope to get better the more I do.

Good luck
Bee

Hermit, I went to a chain store at least in out area called Hancocks, I found some UV Rated 1 outdoor fabric in a color I wanted, it was on a 50% off sale, got it for $4.50 a yard, 54 inches wide.
It does not HAVE to be Sunbrella to work.
Sunbrella is made by Glen Raven Mills, Glen Raven, NC.
OOP's, I hear the Sunbrella Police comin' now...they have the hand-cuffs out.......

Your boat didn't come with any other head sails that you could hank on? I would consider keeping you eyes out for a used one, it doesn't have to be brand new or expensive and there has to be tons of them out there that would work on your boat. Also, you will be able to sail under main alone and at least get some peace and quiet from your engine, nothing beats shutting down the engine when your sail(s) go up.

Sorry this has nothing to do with your original question. I didn't realize there were more than one weight either... I want to start our bimini project soon, but have to wait on the money tree to ripen again...

not certain the measured length but was about 3 inches to 4 inches deep from the cardboard center in radius......many,many yards--more than enough to accomplish canvas work of alll kinds for a 35 ft sloop---including grabrail covers, hatch covers with drop for companionway, boom cover for mainsail, dodger, bimini, cushions for cockpit......will work for the rest of your boat canvas needs----is also called a roll by sunbrella------

There's no particular length to a bolt of fabric. It varies. If fabric is sold by the "roll", there should be a stated length of the fabric. If not, measure it.

Jack- I don't want to buy soemthing that won't last. I know there must be something else out there that will last as long as sunbrella but I don't know anything for sure. I went to a fabric store to see how much sunbrella was. They wanted $40 a yard! I was like you're smoking pot. Ebay has a seller that has it around $10/yard with shipping.
BobM thanks for the ebay sail heads up, but if I spend $300 or $400 on another head sail, I could have had a furler for another $400 or $500. I hate it though becuase my boat just qualifys as a big boat when it comes to buying a furler. The headstay is about 41'.
Cpt Jon-do you already have a sewing machine? I just barrowed my investors wifes machine. It is just a regular type machine and I am not sure if it is up to the task. I sewed some 1" nylon strap, it sewed through 2 layers of that ok. A few times I had to crank the wheel by hand to get the needle to pierce through.

Sailrite sells Sunbrella for 14 or 17 a yard, same as Bacon's.. If you got a better price, i'd like to know it. When Sailrite is at the local sailboat show they sell ends of roll for like 9 bucks a yard. There are other fabrics you can use.
