Now THIS guy knows how to remove a thru-hull!IMHO I believe that 5200 is overkill on thru hull fittings; I use 4200. Having said that, it really wouldn’t matter if I used 5200 because I grind the fittings off from outside the hull to remove them. Easy Peazy!
This 5200 thread usually gets the crowd going!!
4200 instead of 5200? Perfectly reasonable choice.
if the fitting is being replaced anyway, why spend half the afternoon trying to lovingly persuade it out of the boat intact? Easy Peazy indeed!
Here's another trick for the toolbox:
I drive a wooden bung into the victim thru-hull after marking its center, then come at it from outside with an appropriately sized hole saw. Cut just deep enough to separate the flange — no need to go chewing into the hull.
Then slip a sharp putty knife under the flange to cut the remaining sealant and the flange pops right off. Back inside, use the thru-hull nut to get some purchase and twist the remaining body free.
I've found it makes for a nice controlled removal without having to grind the whole fitting away.
That's really the point I've been trying to make about 5200. Once you stop requiring everything to come apart politely and collect a few removal tricks, its tenacity becomes a lot less intimidating.
And YES... I knew exactly what I was doing when I poked the 5200 bear.
I'm beginning to suspect we sailors actually enjoy this debate!?
