Hunter Propeller Anode

Hi all,
I have a 1994 Hunter 29.5 and I am told my propeller is missing an anode. but when I look at the configuration, I'm not sure where the anode would be installed. Does anyone have a photo or diagram of such a boat's propeller setup?

A picture of your prop and running gear would be helpful.

It would not be specifict to Hunter. It would go here...

They look something like this...

You can find them at any chandlery (like West Marine etc.). You just need to know your shaft diameter.

Are you asking about a prop anode or a prop shaft anode? The former being a function of what prop you have; the latter a function only of shaft diameter.

We need to know the brand of prop.

Since you are Lake Ontario you need a magnesium or aluminum anode. Do not put a zinc anode on, they don't work in freshwater.

Yes.
Additionally the space available between the prop and the cutlass bearing. There are a couple of designs to help deal with the available space. You need clearance between the bearing and the anode so that water can get through the bearing to cool it.

Thank you all for the replies. Do sailboats normally have both the propeller anode and the shaft anode? Mine seems to have the shaft anode on but missing something at the end of the prop. Please see the attached photo.

That looks like a Max Prop. There should be an anode on the prop. Also, the shaft anode looks like it is zinc. Should be magnesium or aluminum in freshwater.

as I said earlier, only certain props have prop anodes. It’s a function of which design prop you have. Hard to tell with that picture. If it is a feathering prop, the hub should have accommodation to fit an anode there.

Mine does not have two anodes. So normally, I would say no.

The interior gearing, the blade shape, and the socket screws with cotter pins, is consistent with a Max Prop, however, the blades seem a little thick and the hub shape isn't quite right. Perhaps a very old Gen 1 Max Prop?

No. Older model Max Props have 6 machine screws fixing the end cap to the hub. This prop has neither the machine screws or the end cap. Newer model Max Props do not have the blades mounted so close to the after end of the hub.

Are the blades turning pink at all? Any signs of corrosion on the running gear?

Based on your location and the cradle you and the boats around you are in I'm guessing you're in fresh water. If you're not seeing any signs of corrosion consider running the setup that's already on the boat.

The thing that is throwing me the most is that the end of the hub appears to be open or somewhat recessed, . That may just be a function of the poor quality of the pic. But you are right, the dead giveaway is the socket head screw with a cotter pin, which I didn't notice before. I now beleive the prop is a 2-blade Classic model, only a small number of which used an anode on the end.
