What kind of contaminants appeared in your water system? Do you have any kind of filtration?

I just have a screen that does, indeed catch stuff. I should add a real filter.
Hard to know exactly what the contaminants are. I think just sediment that has accumulated over the almost 40 years of them being water tanks.

I have a screen filter prior to the high pressure pump and then a really good filter post high pressure pump. So all water in my boat is filtered. Practical Sailor did a 3 book series on water systems. They reviewed all sorts of water filters. I got their most highly recommended filter. Great filter!

I'd love to hear details about implementing such a system. Do you use spin-on filters with a separate water trap?
No. They are drop in filters and the water trap is on the bottom. @jssailem has an even cooler fuel filtration system - you should talk to him about that system. But the one I have is quite simple. When I'm not running the boat, let me try to get photos of the set-up.

OK, thanks. I'd like a system with a separate water separator and spin-on fuel filters, like oil filters. I always find swapping my Racor filter a big mess. Thank goodness I always get clean fuel, it seems!

Is your engine self priming? I like my racor filters. I think you need a system in place when changing them but sure, you're dealing with diesel...

p.s. you really should talk to @jssailem about the system he has....

Given that sleep deprivation is such an insidious enimey do you keep any kind of a sleep log to be able to track how much rest you get? I haven't done any multi-day/week passages but used to drive semi-truck with my wife and would do an LA /NJ round trip every week and sleep management was pretty important.

It is an interesting question and my answer may surprise you a bit. Both Gabriel and myself are frequently checking with each other about being tired and state of tiredness. It has turned out that he and I are remarkably compatible in our biorhythms. We don't run a strict schedule at all. We check in with each other frequently to see if one is tired and needs to sleep while the other can now take over. At times, each has said to the other- "you look tired, go rest, I'll take over".

We have worked together in this way since July 2nd when we started. It has worked better than any other regiment I've sailed under. Essentially, each person gets the sleep they need. We have remained quite rested with only a few days of exceptions during heavy weather when we both were both pushed hard.

Interesting, you graphic makes us look further from land than my chart plotter makes us look. We are giving the Island a 5 nm buffer, and I'm kinda cutting that thin.... ;)
