As decision time approaches, I am curious about the advantages and disadvantages of the drogue vs heaving to. If you deploy the drogue, wont you have to run with the wind/waves? When the wind shifts and the seas become more confused how does that affect the drogue? Do you feel testing how the boat behaves hove-to in your current conditions would be worthwhile?
I've often thought about this. My boat has a lot of freeboard and heaving to is a constant struggle.

I run the Party Bridle so I'm into the wind and waves and should be able to adjust my angle into them. For the setup I have, I feel that is the better compromise given all the various constraints I have with this specific boat.

If I actually have to deploy it, I will reassess. (God be willing...) The Jordan Series Drogue has some really good reasons to use it. Truthfully, I hope this remains an academic discussion...

John just texted me and urged you to NOT use your Drogue. [I agreed too]

Your wave forecast is now 10 - 11 feet, which way down from yesterday.

The Currents in your favor , look above.

The drogue will only be deployed if we are risking getting pitch poled due to wave heights/steepness. If the waves aren't a threat, we won't deploy.

This is what I get from Windy for Wednesday (220nm SE of your 1639Z position).View attachment 218579
Yes, that's pretty much what we are getting here - thank you! Reassuring honestly.

The waves are what have me more concerned. The wind speed isn't too bad. Of course gusts are a pain. But the real job we have, as I see it, is to make sure we are running at a correct angle to those waves.

We are likely going to reef more later as the wind builds, but for the moment the boat is running very nicely. We have had a couple of rogue wave strikes that were impressive to experience but nothing more. It is impressive to see and hear a large wave hit....

Have you ever deployed your Jordan in testing, and do you have a plan for retrieving it? I do not have experience with them but have read that it can be a bear to recover.

The marker is your 2239Z position. It appears there you will be in the north quadrant of the cell to your west for about the next hour. Then a bit of rest from the heavier stuff till the end of the line of weather.

Looks like they are thru the dark and stormy night! Exhausted I’m sure, but hopefully nothing broken.
Unfortunately not the case. One of our spreader tips broke and the spreader dropped.

We've been assessing the situation and we think we have a jury rig. The main part of the spreader seems intact, just the end that clamps the wires broke. So we are going up the mast and try to push the spreader back in place and hold it there with seizing wire.

We have been resting today as indeed it was an arduous night...

p.s. Main reason for arduous night was the broken spreader tip. Luckily it was on the down wind side or we would have likely lost the mast.

Don't have a Jordan, I have a para anchor. I'll use the Pardey Bridal method. Retrieval is done from far end, there is a float on a long line at the far end. You retrieve from there.

No I've not tested it. It's also clear at this point I'm not going to use it. At least in the predicted future weather states. There should be no more weather that would require it between here and Azores.

But I have given it a lot of thought to practice on a calm day in the near future. I wanted to do that before leaving but it's one of those things that we didn't get to.

Inspect your tension on all the shrouds. You can use a halyard to aide the loose shroud while you do the repair. Check the mast is in column.

I wish you the best. I hope you can make a good, sturdy repair when you get to the Azores. Who makes the rig on your boat? Any chance of getting original parts?

If there's anything I can do, as I'm in New Bedford, MA, and there are a few riggers here, let me know, please. I'm pretty sure DHL can get stuff to the Azores pronto.

I did some looking, looks like some BELLIURE 41 have rigs made by Kemper/Selden. The spreader tips seem to be a common part, available all over, including the U.K. Curious about how this will work out.

Ok, bit of an update. Got the spreader back in place. Might sound simple but we are in 8 to 10 foot waves. Working in the rigging is anything but easy.

The clamp on the spreader tip is gone, otherwise the spreader itself looks fine. I'm going now to tweek the rigging and see if that is sufficient to get to Horta. I have confidence it will.

We've got some wave increases coming but as they are being driven from afar, I am hoping they are gentil giants only.
