Those are good but what's even more interesting is the new poster that INSTANTLY disappears when you ask for a picture to further assist with his question. If I had a nickel for every one of those I've seen ......................Those are my favorite posters.![]()
It might be my age speaking but I suspect it is a generational thing."Hey, I want answers but it's not like I'm willing to do any work on this."
Yes. Don't be a bitter poster, be a better poster."
It really is hard when you get threads like the one I replied to today.Sometimes it hard then you get this prankster sucking you in………
The funny thing is, I was musing about something along the lines of a "Mr Bean Buys a Boat" series after I posted it.It was like an old time movie script..
I laughed, I cried, it moved me....
Yah it's much better for them to create a new thread and have someone tell them to Search.....Uhhh....@Leeward Rail ... you forgot something in your original plea... you should have replied to a thread that was at least 10 years old. Those are my favorite posters.![]()

Well at least he is self aware. After all he did choose the handle of @GrumpsIt really is hard when you get threads like the one I replied to today.
Scant details. . No photo... Question that requires psychic powers, and a rude response after I gave them an accurate rational solution.
It's just like the guy with the inverter question the other day. People kept telling him wrong answers and no one bothered to tech him how to go about sizing the wiring and fuses correctly. Some of the "answers" were downright wrong. One guy said his wire size was OK without even asking how long the wires were!!!It might be my age speaking but I suspect it is a generational thing.
A similar version would occasionally happen with apprentices at the shop.
They would want an answer without wanting to know" why", which obviously is the important thing when learning.
Well, according to Hitchcock it is (The Birds)!Fun fact. A lit cigarette isn't enough to set off gasoline fumes.
I’ve noticed a lot of factually wrong as well as logically incoherent postings to on-line forums. SBO, regrettably, included occasionally. But that’s more than compensated for in here by the abundance of solid information and good discussions. It's just like the guy with the inverter question the other day. Give 'em a fish or teach him how to fish. If you choose the first, it starts to smell fishy...![]()
True, but what responsibility do you think we have to point out blatantly false information that could actually harm the original poster?I’ve noticed a lot of factually wrong as well as logically incoherent postings to on-line forums. How do we find a balance between those two? (Serious question, not sarcastic.) I don’t think it’s fair that every time someone asks a question we tell them “come back after you’ve read the unabridged works of Calder, Casey, Toss, Maine Sail, and (God help them) Bethwaite.” There’s absolutely a place for references, but I think there’s value in the forum for providing context for the specific parts of those references that apply, and answering questions in a way that complements the material.Give 'em a fish or teach him how to fish. Don’t get me wrong, I think Bethwaite is awesome. But we may have different perspectives on what an easy read is!...... but bethwaite such an easy read and has lots of pictures. i like picture.
it's easier to play the game if you have read the rules
sailing is like chess. a simple read of the boy scout chess merit badge book will take you light years ahead of just watching others and playing the game without any understanding. little tips don't help much.
sailing ain't checkers.
bethwaite is for beginners, and experts too, such an easy read
you don't learn how to race from the guy who never wins
you can't trim a sail without knowing what lines to pull/ease
practice practice practice ............
but practicing it wrong don't help much

Been my experience the tradition is by post 3 the discussion has left the subject topic making a resource for future searches very unhelpful.1) Search the Internet and this forum to see if the your question has already been solved previously
2)Gather all pertinent details including photos.
3) start new thread for any additional questions not resolved by previous research.
An Internet tradition since.. Well.. Bulletin Boards and Forums were invented.
