Hello fellow Captans !

I am a new sailor, and have some questions about sailing.

After these few questions, I figure i should be good. I took an online boating course and got a certificate. It sure is easy to be Captain. :-D

My course only talked about motorboats, so I watched a few sailing videos online.

I decided to learn to sail after I saw some unemployed people sailing boats on youtube.

Working is hard, and I don’t have much money, but a nice man at the marina gave me an old 30 foot sailboat for free. I hope to have it fully fixed up in the next few months. One thing I want to do is put some cool LED lights inside and get a better stereo.
The best thing is, this boat has what the guy called soft decks ! They don’t seem much nicer on the feet, but that may just be me.

I took the yacht out today. (So coool i have a FREE YACHT !! eat that suckers !) The red and green thing was a bit confusing, but some nice people in other boats yelled at me, and waved their arms, so i knew which way to go.

My questions:

The engine was leaking water out the back for some reason. I think it was a sink leak. Are the hoses hooked up wrong ? Some people are stupid ! I played with some taps, and the water stopped. So that is good.
Motor sounds real good now. Much louder than before, so that likely means I have more horsepower ! How should I fix the hoses ?
The wind and sails are very confusing. It worked great when i wanted to go past the beach bar, but when I turned, the sailboat either stopped or leaned over A LOT. How do I make the wind blow from behind ?
What is the thing on the front for ? it looks broken and I need a new one.

I don’t have time to search the internet, so please help me !

I should have my youtube and patreon pages up soon. If I fix the boat in the next month or so, I want to sail to those islands where others go, this winter.

I want the "lifestyle" and live my “best life”.

Thank you fellow Captans.

P.S. if you aren’t a Captan, please don’t reply. I have taken a course so I already know more than those people anyhow.

I think you may want to re-read your post…..you don’t want to do a search, you got a free sailboat that has soft decks but your planning on putting a stereo and cabin lights…….I recommend stopping, searching and figure out if the boat ( not a yacht) is worth the required work as it pertains to your abilities stereos and lights do not keep the rig up and the boat afloat. Sorry for the criticalness but you are kind of all over the place .The post almost reads as a troll post. From a “Captain”

So, I know you’re being a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I think maybe also a little overly critical.

We all learn in different ways, and we all make mistakes along the way. Some people learn better through conversation than just reading. If someone posts a question that could be easily answered with a search I personally don’t mind answering them or pointing them to a resource. If others don’t care to partake it’s easy enough for them to ignore the post. And who am I to tell someone they should save up to buy a boat in excellent condition before they can afford to enjoy time on the water.

Now a couple of your points I definitely agree with too - a person should know the rules of the road and how to maintain and operate a safe boat before they set out. And if they have less experience (or more experience) they shouldn’t reply rudely to those who are trying to help.

That is different than being lazy and wanting others to do the legwork.

If a tech walked into the front office with a question without doing actual legwork to at least have concrete questions. They should be fired.

Tell that to the youtube idiots who got a free boat, and it sank in the harbour, causing an environmental and navigational hazard. They were surprised that resolving that would be very expensive... And asked strangers to bail them out of their own stupidity.

Or the guys who drive old German cars to look cool and cant pay for the repair bills so their car gets towed away and they lost all that money.

Economics and entropy eventually tell them one way or the other.

Well done!

And some of the replies that maybe took you seriously are almost as funny.

I meant it as both commentary and joke.

The fact that @MikeHoncho and others suspected it was a joke or troll, but also thought it was possibly serious is the commentary part.
It really is kinda disturbing that people, including myself, sometimes aren't sure if a post like this is serious. Simply because there are actually people out there who would post like that in ernest.

I really should have used a pseudonym, and replied to the resulting posts. Would have been a fun and interesting "study"

Man this blew right by me. There are some really terrible questions/posts that I, in my earlier years, would have raked them over the coals but I guess I have come to realize that stupid people should be treated with respect also, most of the time (but not always). Mods deleted a post of mine a while back and sent a a nasty gram (that was bs) regarding my lack of respect for a post that asked a question and also saying they were too lazy to search. My motto is learn from all experiences so although it was bs, I’m trying g to be a ”better“ poster.
