You wouldn't think it was so pretty if you were sailing downwind in waves. That long wishbone boom is scary. I spend a long evening racing around Block Island on a Nonsuch 30. Going down wind with the huge main freed, when the boat rolls to leeward the boom is in the water. That drags the boom back aft. Then when the boats rolls back the boom comes out of the water and the wind pushes the boom forward with dispatch. Then the main sheet fetches up and the whole boat and rig shake. Three times a minute for a couple of hours is more than I needed.

The example the give here in this article is a sloop. I wonder if two smaller sails alleviates some of the problems you mention?
