That's a scruffy small yard and marina a mile and a half up the Trent, on the south bank. I forget its name.

Most people didn't move their boats because there was nowhere for them to go. The yards all were full.

The marina suffering the most damage was Bridge Point, at the mouth of the Trent. Its floating docks overtopped their pilings and came to pieces.

That is common. They don't put a big time restraint to prevent the bollard "loop" from going over the top.
Nah, no need for those restraints. No way the water will ever get that high.

I didn’t mean to make light of the suffering in New Bern. You can see how the damage played out - boats floating off their jack stands and damaging other boats, or boats breaking away from fixed slips hitting other boats. Floating docks are not much of solution either, they tend to float off and crush boats. Hampton YC VA rebuilt their floating docks after the last hurricane and installed very tall dock piles to avoid having that happen again...maybe.

I just don’t see the sense of hauling a boat during a hurricane anywhere near there, it is all low country. There appear to be at least two creeks on the eastern side of the Neuse down river that would make good hurricane holes where you could stuff in with 3 or 4 anchors, long rodes and avoid the demolition derby. I’m headed to the area in a few weeks, want to take a look at the situation.

As a dealer, I use to purchase heavy duty anchors times twice to three times needed along with 150 feet of heavy dut line with chain too per each boat. In a huuican hole where the sea floor would accomodate anchors, I use to throw one anchor to the east backing up until it held fast and the other anchor to the south backing up till it held fast as well. Imperative to use chafe gear where the lines went over the sides.
Then I made sure the boat would clear others in a full swing.
Never lost a boat in North Carolina during hurricanes learning that method from the long time locals who previously had done that successfully, not from the weekend warriors

Looking closely, I think it has a Harken Furler on the bow.
I'm not sure the boat knew that the house was the stand on vessel as it had limited movement ability.

Yeah, probably. But not a typical seaman's reaction. A sunken boat or a boat washed ashore is not something that you or I, or most people here would joke about.

New Bern is located at spot for maximum storm surge. I count...
1) 5 boats sunk
2) 2 possible small sailing craft sunk
3) One sailboat de-masted.
4) Two onlookers wondering whats next
5) 3 power boats siting on top of finger pier bollards. Middle boat not good

Note the fence pushed over in upper right. The fence tried to act as a dam to the incoming water.

I think you missed the mast standing alone in the water.... 6th boat sunk is under that mast, I think.
Makes you heartsick to think of returning to your boat to find it a wreck...

He was in the process of salvaging everything he could when I briefly interviewed him.

Went to check on my S/V today. Seems to still be floating as best I can tell from Shore. I used four anchors in quadrants around the boat. I anchored in less than 6 feet of water (boat draws 5'7" unladen) and used about 150 feet of nylon line for each with a chain leader. Chafe gear was applied to each line. The anchors were two danforths a Lewmar claw and a Manson Supreme. I did the same in Irene and survived. I saw many boats today that were hauled tipped over in the yards and boats at docks with cleats ripped out and lines snapped in half. Massive tree damage around town. I have some house damage but others fared much worse. Huge trees uprooted all around the area. Someone tell me why gas station canopies over the pumps get destroyed in every storm and the code is never revised to make them storm worthy? After Irene I was unable to retrieve two anchors. They were buried so deep I'd need a barge and crane to pull them up. Anchors are a lot cheaper than haul out contracts and then the cost of hauling out. I can buy four Manson Supremes for the price of one year of a haul out contract. The multi million dollar sportfishers and mega yachts get the priority. I expect a road trip to Defender is in my very near future for new anchors.

You are wrong, Rick. Most of us on this forum DO have a sense of humor and have the couth to know when to use it, but you seem to be the odd man out. I recall what might have been your most recent post, also objecting in foul-mouth terms that someone had made lite of whatever the subject was. SO, I hereby repeat my reply to that thread in repeating maybe you should find a forum where you might be happier and people can speak their mind withput being chastized. I hope the moderators will track your post for a while.

Not to make light of the situation there, but during superstorm Sandy most boats that got pulled out before the storm floated off their jack stands and were severely damaged or destroyed completely. the few of us that kept our boats in the water weathered the storm nicely. Fortunately, the pilings at our Marina are quite tall.
