When I got my boat rigid vang was already there. I cannot find anywhere any instructions for spring tension. Is there any adjustment?

Typically not. The force is normally sized and based on the size of the unit and the boats it is designed for. It is a spring or a gas piston? The gas pistons fail over time and need replacing.

The spring tension was determined by the size of the unit that was originally purchased (based on the size of the vessel)

I assume if I put the topping lift back on and raise the tail end of the boom the last 4 feet of raising the main will be a lot easier

Yes. If your vang is shot and your boom droops, you will get to the point near the end of the hoist where you are pulling the mainsail up by its leech and not the luff. Thats HARD.

The rigid vang on my boat didn't hold the boom above the dodger so I removed and took it in to Garhauer, they said" Looks like it's missing a spring" They pulled it apart and it had 3 springs and originally shipped with 4, they put a 4th one in. No charge, nice people.

Exact same thing happened to my friend in Chicago. He described what he found to them over the phone, they sent him the spring. My friend is not the handiest of folks, but is certainly willing. If he can do it...:)

I started to take it apart, but had visions of little parts or bearings flying everywhere, turned out it was incredibly simple, only took 15 minutes and most of that was walking across the shop.
