Hi All,

I have an issue that I hope I can get some advise for. I have a 1993 Hunter H 19 (19-2) and the bottom trailing edge of the keel is splitting, that is not what I am asking about (unless you feel like doing some glass work).

I am in need of some advice and directions on exactly how to remove the keel from the trunk. I think the bolts are likely located where the compression post comes down to the sole, but there is a fiberglass / plastic covering over it and wanted to know how it is attached before tearing at it with a screwdriver or something like it only to find out that there is some "trick" to remove it.. and having it crack.

I need to remove the keel, do the fiberglass repairs and probably replace any bushings and bolts if they are rusted so any guidance in this area would be helpful.

Thanks

It should be a fairly straight forward repair. There is a keel pivot boat for the keel blade. Locate that, jack and support the hull above the trailer, remove the bolt with the blade supported and then lower the blade.
It looks like you might need to replace your keel blade if that crack is as big as it appears.
There are manuals or copies of them on this site and repair write-ups. Check them out.

Do you know where any of the links to these manuals or repair write-ups you refer to are located, I've not been able to locate anything specific to this.

If this is a water ballast and I would assume so, there are a couple of things to consider which are important. Everyone calls them a swing keel but the correct terminology is Swing Centerboard as the ballast is the water ballast itself in the tank.

If the centerboard has cracked open, then water has seeped into the interior which is also made of foam and in many cases it cannot be repaired. You can order from this site a new centerboard if that is the case if unrepairable. If not, advise and I can direct you. Hhowever, I can tell you from the photos, you will have to replace it.

As for removal, if you will remove the cover plate inside the cabin at the base of the compression post, you will see one rather large stainless steel bolt which holds the centerboard bracket in place underneath the hull. If you are not savvy enough, for safety sakes, I would strongly suggest that you go ahead and have a yard to lift the boat up in order to remove the centerboard and housing.

I know this boat too well, outsold all other dealers on this model, and ended the production when asked by Warren Luhrs as to why. If you do not have an owners manual, look under boat information and download it for your records.

I actually do have the manual, but it doesn't have much detail on the keel or on any type of removal procedures.

I found it really surprising that I couldn't get any information from Hunter other than to take it to a repair facility; also I had been looking for the specifications on the Gin-Pole for raising the mast, and they referred me to the forum... Really! They designed and built the boat, but don't offer a replacement part or some measurements to have one fabricated??? I find this ridiculous, a tiny PDF or even a JPEG file would have been all it takes for making this detail available.

Centerboard Uphaul Line

I finally was able to remove the keel from the trunk. After making the fiberglass repairs I made some improvements to the pivot pin bushing which was made from pvc & was very worn. I found a sintered bronze bushing that fit with little work & the keel is much steadier.

I replaced the 2 uphaul lines with super low stretch line.

Hunter 19 Control Lines

Centerboard Uphaul Line: 7/16" x 12' No Stretch Braided Line

Centerboard Cascade Line: 3/8" x 10' No Stretch Braided Line
