Have begun a near complete re-fit, inside & out.....have a ton of new features and ideas that I am going to include.

For a number of reasons I have always wanted one these.....

Simply to be different for one. The Mega's long sleek look in the water, wide aft - open style transom, large cockpit, 30 footer with tiller steering, 2300lb cast iron retractable keel, trailerable, and a ton of things that can be done to improve it both in performance and aesthetics.

That's just what I'm going to do.

I enjoy taking pics of the work I do, I will be sure to post them.

The list:

Sailboat sling system for removing from trailer
Hull paint
Interior paint
Topside paint, including non-slip
Completely redesigned new teak cabinetry
Complete new electrical, AC & DC
All new dimming able LED lighting throughout
Complete new enclosed head, plumbing, holding tanks
Complete new v-berth, settee's, cockpit cushions & upholstery
New cabin windows -redesigned look
New A-frame mast raising system
New outboard motor mount
Retractable swim platform
Walk thru transom
Redesigned mainsail boom traveller
Complete cockpit camper top enclosure system including dodger
Thru hull Lewmar bow thruster
and some rather interesting storage concepts, engine control, nav equipment & lighting ideas...

Boom raised 16" so it is now 77" from the cockpit sole. Wanted to stand up without hitting my lid - I'm 6'2" This 30' "Beauty" has a 39' mast, large sail plan & fast....figured I could afford a few square feet of the mainsail. It is being used near entirely for cruising. Mainsail has been cut, reconfigured, and re-sewn. Traveller has been removed from the cockpit...being replaced with cabin top mid-boom 4:1 purchase set up. As well as a boom vang. image-1629007030.jpg
Was designing an arch for the traveller.....changed my mind. image-1405101719.jpg
This photo-shopped pic shows that arch traveller set-up....my concern was weight. Also note the redesigned cabin window look....the new acrylic will be the same shape as original but the revised look will have black paint or vinyl to elongate, straighten and re-shape to resemble the more modern look of today's sailboats.
image-2093090599.jpg
The original C&C aft railings are removed and not sure if they will be re-used at this point.
image-1855395546.jpg
The full enclosure will be the last thing to be done on this project. Whisker pole is removed from the deck mounts and will be fastened to the lifeline poles for clear side decks.

The aft will have the "20 hp" spring loaded lifting engine mounted to Starboard. (We have and will use our 9.9 Merc...just want the stronger mount)
image-61050415.jpg
The original outboard transom opening will be used to board the boat via the retractable swim platform with telescoping ladder combo.

image-4014866366.jpg
The drain tub will have a matching slat teak sub floor (as the cabin sole) installed in a flat horizontal position to step on/ thru when the aft port seat is lifted.

Nice work on the Mega

Greetings,

I'm thinking up upsizing to a Mega from my current boat. I find find what you've done with your boat to be great. Given the posting dates, I gather there has been much time spent...any rough idea of how many hours?

Regards..Mike from Beeton

Wow - you've been busy. What you've done so far looks good. I'll be interested in the retractable swim platform. I like getting rid of the outdated instruments and filling in the holes. So many boats put the instruments there and are always asking crew to move so they can see them. Plus, when we hang in the cockpit - which is the place we hang, it's a pain to be leaning up against the compass, in particular.
I think that is an iron keel, or at least the local one appears that way. What shape is/was yours in?

Must admit, the instruments in their factory original positions are very convenient from a sailing point of view (in the line of sight)....but there are others who sail with you like your wife & dog.

Moving them was obvious from a comfort point of view....my wife enjoys sitting against the cabin wall while under sail, with nothing in her way (including sheets, travellers, instruments etc.)
As you mentioned, we also"hang" in the cockpit a lot...so I'm making a concerted effort to clear any (and all if possible) control lines and controls. The plan is to run all but the mainsheet (which will be cabin top controlled) to the gunwales and aft to the tiller, which includes two new hopefully self tailing #10 winches and cam cleats (starboard & port)

As for the keel, it is a 2300 lb retractable cast iron bulb, it is in decent shape...it is on my list to refinish it as well.
