He's apparently on vacation until August 19th. That's why the blog at SailNet started. Sailrite appears to be the only other quality source.

Use the link I left and read the blog at SailNet. It has a lot of good information.

If you need it real quick you will find it in a well-stocked RV/Camper parts store, like at an RV dealer. Down side is it's probably black. I got beige from Palamino, when I was repairing my camper, and got about 10' of 1" wide stuff real cheap.

If you're ordering I recommend MaineSail, but I can't figure out how to order it from his photo site.

For the OP, the RV stuff is slightly different than the stuff Maine Sail has. Thickness, width, "stretchability" etc.

Based on what? The stuff I've purchased looks pretty much the same as what Maine sells, judging by the pics.

I don't know what you got, but Maine Sail explains how he spent a LOT of time finding the right stuff.

Your boat, your choice.

So, you're saying that somehow what I turned up for butyl tape, knowing nothing about it, is inferior to what Mainsail cam up with, because it took him a lot of time to find it. And it's my boat, so I'm entitled to apply inferior materials to it. O.K., got it, thanks Stu. Very helpful.

Maine Sail's butyl tape

No, please chill. All I said was I didn't know what you got, but before I ordered Maine Sail's stuff I read what he wrote and appreciated the fact that he did my "homework" and research for me and found a good product.

I've used it and I trust it and him.

I simply hope that what you got is equal or superior to it, and wish you all the best in the work you are using it for.

All the best, Stu

I've used butyl purchased at an RV place and from MaineSail. They look the same and both are gray. They are different though. My RV stuff is more like putty--MS's is more like maleable rubber, like Silly Putty. If I pull on a piece of my RV stuff, it will stretch a bit and then break. If I do the same with MS's, it stretches a lot more. Not scientific, but those are my observations.

Well, I think Maine will be back in a couple of days. I am sure he will elaborate on the butyl tape he has tested and recommends. I, like Stu, have come to trust what Maine does. He goes beyond what testing is needed to ensure that if he says something he can stick to his guns.

So, let's wait for Maine to get back and see what comments he has.

jviss, there's a post about this somewhere, please excuse me for being too lazy to search for it right now. Basically, it says that he looked extensively for a tape with certain properties that he believes to be important to boat owners, and that not all tape is the same. He found one he likes, and he sells it.

I trust MS's research and judgement, as many others do, so that's the tape I'd prefer. (Just bought some, in fact.) I think that's about all there is to this. I don't see anyone saying that buying another tape is wrong. If it works for you, it works for you. That's all that matters in the end.

I work in RF communications and have mountains of black butyl tape. It is very similar to what MS sells, but it is black and stands out more than the gray does. I don't know if it is a pliable as the gray, but is sufficiently so. I've used it on many things, but like I said, the black edge stands out more against a white deck and seems to require a bit more cleanup.

When I first got my boat, I ordered some RV butyl, and bedded a fair number of items. Most ended up leaking, and there aren't many spots where I haven't had to redo it. Nothing I've bed with Main Sail's stuff has leaked. His stuff has a much different feel and "stick" to it. I'm sure that with enough effort, another source could be found. Maybe even on the first order! But after making one mistake, and now using his -- well, it's a no-brainer.

Well, all I wanted was to find out how to get some of Maine's which is why I posted here. And, yeah it was a typo. I didn't even notice it until it was pointed out...Amazing how you can keep reading things the same way.....So, I guess we can afford some time for Maine to takeoff for awhile. Hopefully, he has fair winds and nice wine. Catch him when he gets back

I bought a couple of rolls of his butyl tape last year, but for the life of me, I can't remember how. But I'm very satisfied with that stuff, and use it for most things that need bedding.

There may be similar products available, but I went with the recommendations (primarily here), and in go/no-go fashion, it's worked as advertised, is easier to deal with than anything in a tube, and I'm happy, so that's as far as I'll look. I don't even mask around the joints - after it's had a little time to ooze, I just use a razor knife and gently stretch and cut my way around, in one go normally, without touching gel coat with the knife. Wait too long, and it'll bond to the gel coat though, making it harder to do that.

Mark,

I hope to be able to re-activate my order buttons tonight or tomorrow if cell service holds up. Right now it is not good. Bed-It Tape will resume shipping Monday.... Sorry for not answering more questions but with 1x data, barely, even a response like this takes 20 minutes..

Maine,
don't worry about it. It's not critical. Have some fun...
