Water Tank and Sink Questions for Oday26

Hi,

I'v been getting a second hand Oday ready for a maiden voyage for a while now and I have some questions...

For starters, I'd like to flush out the water for an 84' Oday 26. I can see the tank itself under a cabin bench, however, I don't see how to drain it. Is there a plug that leads to the bilge?

Also, when I filled up the water tank, I noticed water began flowing into the galley sink. Does the galley sink typically work without a pump? If so, it seems it would probably only work when the tank is pretty full. Another question is "Where does the galley sink typically drain out? The bilge?

The handle on the galley sink facet does not seem to do very much. Anyone else ever have any problems with this?

Thanks for any answers! :)

I have the 25 O'day. The OEM sink faucet will pump water when you worked the handle. Could the water pressure have pushed the water into the faucet and sink?
The galley sink should drain out through a thru hull fitting under the sink. At least that is where it drains on my 1980 model.
I had read that a rebuild kit was available for the sink faucet but I don't know how old that thread was.
Can't help you with the tank drain. Not knowing what was or is in my water system I plan on using bottle water.

Thanks for your help, Ward

- Not sure what you mean by "work the handle" - Move it back and forth?

That pumps water into the faucet?

>Could the water pressure have pushed the water into the faucet and sink?

- I guess that's what happened.

Appreciate it. Every piece of knowledge helps.

Rick

the faucet is actually a diaphragm pump. the handle pumps the water. I have read where some have replaced these with standard faucets and install electric pumps or foot pumps.

Mine came with an electric pump. There is a red button near the aft sink. My aft sink drains to a through hull under the aft sink. I have no idea where the water tank is. There is a filler on the port side that says waste, however the boat doesn't have a toilet. I've been sailing with bottled water for now, but I should get to the bottom of all this if I'm going to make full use of the boat. All the water lines that I can see are filthy so the thought of using the system is not very appetizing :)

As it turns out, Ward H described my galley sink situation - It's a diaphragm hand pump. It must be a little worn out because it takes an awful lot of pumping for a tiny trickle of water. But this is a minor detail for now.

I did not see a drain for the water tank but I did see the tailpipe where the water drains into a single pipe for the galley sink. I suppose I can put a T-valve there and drain it into the bilge when I want to.

Now to find out why the galley sink is not draining at all...

Similar question on this, my drain pipe goes into a massive hull fitting, but the valve only turns 90 degrees either way, and it does not drain. Can I run a snake down this or is there some time of filter that needs to be cleaned? And is it normal for that valve to have such a small turn radius? Or should it have full 360 movement? My sink is pretty backed up!

Thanks!

That sounds like a ball valve. Does it have a straight handle? If it does, Cross way is closed, inline is open. I'm not sure you could get a snake through there, perhaps a wire.

Is there a hose clamp above the valve you can remove? Be cautious if the boat is in the water. Make sure the valve is closed.

The hose that drained the galley sink through the through hull is probably clogged. It does so very easily. If it is clogged, to unclog it first try this trick. Be sure that your thru-hull valve is open. Then use a toilet plunger to pump up and down. If there is some simple material like slime or mold this should clear it.
This is also a good time to check the clamps on your hoses. First be sure that the through hole valve is closed. If you are not sure how to do this get a fellow sailor to help, or post a picture of your valve online here. (You need to learn how to post pictures today). Then with a flashlight carefully inspect your clamps. If any of them are rusty or in poor condition they should be replaced immediately with high quality marine grade stainless steel hose clamps. Now do the same things with your head sink. If you are not sure what high-quality marine grade stainless steel hose clamps are, then you can research that on practical sailor. You will need a subscription that includes both the online database and the monthly magazine. It is well worth the money, a much better value than almost anything else u will buy for your sailing lifestyle.
You'll notice that it is very difficult to work underneath the galley sink. You can barely get one hand in under the sink. There is no easy way around this.
I installed a foot operated whale pump underneath my galley seek and really liked it a lot.u can research that under Jamestown distributors or defender marine.

Rick,
If the thru hull valve looks like an outside hose valve with a round handle I suggest you get it changed out with a qtr turn ball valve type. The round handle type is a gate valve. There is no way for sure to know if it is closed all the way.
The gate valve on my 25 was frozen to the point I could not move it. I had it replaced with a qtr turn ball valve. Glad I did as the old valve was frozen in the open position.

- That looks like a good possible solution. Did you mount the floor foot pump inside the cabinet or outside?

Yes, it's a quarter-turn valve. Thanks for pointing that out. It's nice to at least know when the valve is supposed to be fully closed. That and a bilge pump just in case... :)

Here is my valve, is it just a quarter turn?

Crap! I wouldn't touch it with the boat in the water. Please review these links to our websites host, Maine Sail's how to page on through hulls. Just follow the link and scroll down to the article on "sea cock and thru hulls, pre information and primer"

I put it just inside the cabinet and cut a little slot for the "handle" to stick out, the put the foot pad on the handle, fit well, installed easy, and worked great. We loved it. I never felt that I had a good place for it under the sink in the head though.

Yikes, that wasn't the reaction I was hoping for. Unfortunately I'm slipped, and don't have a trailer option unless I find someone at the marina who has one to borrow.

If your reaction was due to the condition it appears to be in...it's not that bad. It had a dirt dobber nest on the top of it, so it just needs to be cleaned. Almost to that side of the boat.

What's behind that inspection plate. I don't think I have one on mine. Does it go back to the engine compartment?
