zincs placement on the shaft

Getting ready to replace the zincs and it occurred to me as to where on the shaft is the place? I usually place them about 8" from the strut.

Close to the strut, close to the thru hull opening, mid way. Wondering about vibration issues if really matters.

Or who cares?

Worst case for vibration is to put them right in the middle .. I usually try to get them closer to the strut but not so close a to affect the water flow into the Cutless.

zinc placement on the shaft

I read somewhere that the shaft zinc should be placed one shaft diameter in front of the strut.

Anode location on a prop shaft is a really a non-issue. Put them wherever you like, as long as they aren't in contact with the hull or impeding water flow to the cutless.

When I put my zincs on the shaft I always keep them far enough away from the strut just in case for some crazy reason I have to uncouple shaft and slide away from engine. Hate to have to do something and shaft won't move because of zincs...... One never knows........

Claude, that would be true if you had a vibration to start with because the added weight would help create a greater whipping action . Otherwise, the anode is equally balanced all around the shaft and has no impact whatsoever. Like Jim, I place mine about 6 to 8" from the cutless and have had no vibration at all. Claude

I put it about 1" before the strut because someone I know experienced a drive coupling disengage at reverse. The shaft went back and open up a 1" hole for seawater. The prop jam on the rudder to make towing difficult. If the zinc was able to prevent the shaft from leaving, there would be no drama.

On the same topic, did you check the torque bolt on the coupler lately? Some installation only has a small Allen screw. Scary indeed.

When going forward, the shaft transfer the torque towards the transmission. When reverse, the shaft try to pull out of the coupler.
