If one needs a zinc pencil in the engine, is there not one in the air conditioning unit? After all, it too is in contact with sea water and the electrical system? I appreciate any responses and don't berate me if this is a stupid query. Thanks. FM C-350. Texas

A/C Corrosion

This IS a good question! I don’t recall ever seeing a Zinc anode on an Air-Conditioning System - nor do I recall seeing much evidence of corrosion, which would have suggested that Zincs should have been installed. I suppose the main reason that Zincs don’t seem to be required on A/C units is that the materials in contact with seawater (Pumps & Condensers) are generally highly resistant to corrosion. ie: The Condensing tubes are often ‘CuNi’ (Cupro-Nickle - or other hi-tech alloys). If metalic (Bronze) thru-hulls and seacocks are utilized, they must be galvanically bonded, which effectively ties them into the (already present) Zincs. OMO, Gord

Zincs not needed

The short of it is that there are no dissimilar metals with the recirculating cooling system associated with a marine air conditioner system. Enjoy! I had an a/c unit in one boat we used to own that was 12 years old. Still ran like new. When we bought our 411 2 years ago, the first thing that we installed was a/c & heat. Call me spoiled.
