Your Best Crewmember?

I would say
an Electric Windless. My wife is more comfotabal being on the fordeck then at the helm in anchorages and with the push of a button can raise or lower the anchor. We dont have an auto pilot and dont really have a big need for one in Puget Sound as your not on the same tack for very long weaving your way thru the Islands but if I had one Im sure it would get used. But I love drivin the boat anyway, tweekin playin racer feelin the power.

AP = Incompentance
Best crew are in order My wife also a captain ,with more endorsements than me ,and two close friends that will sail at the drop of a hat and I can trust my life with them . Last and used only to see if it still works! The AP . After nearly run down in the Med. by a ferry on AP I don't like these things ,they breed incompentence !

I've found that our AP allows me INCREASED
watch-keeping, not any complacency. It's been noted here twice that APs do just the opposite. I seem to disagree. When the AP is doing it's thing and the boat's sailing great, it gives me a greatly enhanced ability to keep a good lookout (not that I'm not doing that anyway...)

AP occassionally
I use the AP for when I'm single handling her and need to relieve myself. I'm careful to slow her down to a crawl and take a very good luck around before going below for a very quick pit stop. I also use it when tacking. It allows "my constant advisor" to stay engrossed in her book, nap or whatever. I'll also use it on occasion to sit back and enjoy the ride. I do have a tendency to dove off when it's on and conditions are just right so the AP gets turned off with the first nod.

I can do the other things without becoming complacent. I find when I am under AP (but ALWAYS behind the wheel), I watch more than usual because of not having full control. I NEVER use it in traffic. Would YOU trust other skippers. Either power or sail?

Autopilots are like any other piece of machinery, only as good as the operator. We sail nothern Lake Michigan, and when cruising, it is on 95% of the time. It alows me to better manage all the systems on the boat and keep a better lookout than if I were trying to follow a course without it. In my working days, I flew airplanes for a living, and I believe that properly used, autopilots make both aircraft and boats safer! This in no way endorses the idots, who turn on "Otto" and go below and fix lunch or use the head. I have been nearly run down by boats with no visible human at the helm. fair winds Dave
