No kidding

We're just looking out the window wondering why people ever settled here...

Using the head w/AP

Lest I be included on your list of idiots that use the head while on AP. Let me restate I power down to just enough to barely keep steerage, make my trip to the head short and keep an eye on things out the head port. The first and most critical rule is to never, ever, do so with any other boat in sight. I believe it's a lot safer than hanging off the rail or swim platform to accomplish the same goal.

lil navigator

My best crew right now is my little navigator. It is my Garmin handheld GPS which tells me a lot of things that I like to know when sailing. In typical order, these are current speed, top speed, average speed, and estimated time to go when getting to a waypoint. I also use it to log my trip, both visually as a track log, but also as total time and distance, along with the items mentioned above. Occassionally, I even use it to confirm my position. I thought I might like a second crew member as auto pilot, which would leave me lots of time to fiddle with the strings, as I often sail solo. For my size of boat and lake however, its just not worth the $. I use a tiller tamer instead, which gives me about 10 to 15 seconds to dive under, get a drink or sandwich before the trim changes on the boat, and I am heading in a different direction.

Head?

Hi Mike; No problem here, that is just what I do. Slow down until I am just making headway and scan the horizon before I go below. However, this is not the time to read the Sunday edition of the New York Times;-))) fair winds Dave

Sports section only

Dave I agree, you should just keep it to the sports section :) Actually here on the Chesapeake I'm more concerned about running over a crab pot line than anything else while I'm below. Tangle one around your prop shaft and you're going for a swim. Not very inviting unless it's summer time. Mike

Fish nets

Hi Mike; Understand about the crab pots, here in the Northern Lake Michigan area, we have tribal fish nets in a lot of places. Some can be almost 1/2 wide, with just a skinny pole float at each end. Your are generally OK if you go over the middle, but avoid close to the stakes. Our water Temps may reach 70 at the highest, but a lot colder most of the year. Been lucky so far, but I have given up night sailing except right in our bay because of them. fair winds Dave
