My wife and I were on the 18th. green at Pebble Beach watching the ATT Pro Am on a beautiful day and I enjoying some great golf when a sail boat caught my eye and I spent about an hour watching this guy sail. I'm trying to restore a 78 Catalina 22 back to life. Watching this guy sail really got me amped! Yup, I got the bug real bad! Has anything like that happen to any one else?

It is bad when you walk the docks just to see what sail boats are there. It is like a hobby.

Sailing will do that to you though!

Yeah, I find myself scanning the background for sailboats while watching the AT&T on TV. When you find something that can trump the golf addiction, then you know you got it really bad.:eek:

I'm the head pro at a driving range, so I've seen first-hand how addictive golf can be. They say, "a boat is a big hole in the water you throw money into", but you should see how much these guys spend hitting that little white ball into a field; and way more than you'd think, do it 7 days a week. At least with sailing you have a physical object to show where your money is going.

I've offered to start a 12-step program for some of the worst of the lot, but no takers yet.:D

My soon-to-be wife has resigned herself to the fact that where we go on vacations always has time for dock walking.. Sausalito was a real treat last summer because they don't have all the piers locked as they now do in Houston.. A couple of years ago, we scheduled a trip to see her sister and kids around the Volvo's stop in Boston. A real treat as well.. Yes.. sailing gets to you. Way back in the day(1971 ish), before I'd sailed much, I would sometimes sit on the "point" in New Orleans, across from the Southern Yacht Club and watch the boats come and go (as I enjoyed some of the original Popeyes chicken).. I knew then that I'd have a sailboat..

Funny you should mention that you also are working on a C-22 Monte. I do the same, always scanning the background for sailboats. But there was a C-22 in a lot of the early hole coverage. It was on a lift next to a long pier. It got more coverage than the cruiser out there on the mooring.

Pebble Beach is my second favorite tourney after the Masters. Mainly because I have played the course and been there two other times for the tournament. One of the benefits of working for Big Blue and spending time in San Jose.

You know you have the bug bad when you have stayed overnight 6 times on the hard in the last month during the Wisconsin winter. Thank you mother nature for the mild weather.

I have to sit in my office everyday and look across the street to see my boat on the hard. Pros of working across the street from the marina in the summer...... Really sucks for the winter!

oh yes, for sure!! I sometimes have work meeting in our yacht club and have had a difficult time keeping on point as friends (or not) sail by constantly.
If we are not on our boat we are likely having a sandwich at the top of the bluff watching others sailing... When we have gone to any location on the water we do the same as someone above described....walk the docks, just to see all the boats. On a trip to Friday Harbor had a great time in the marina looking at each boat. Recently visited Sausalito and spent hours looking and chatting with those coming in off the bay. Up and down the coast from SD to San Francisco we stop at all the harbors we can find and check them all out....... Ventura, Morro Bay (one of our favorites cause it is so crazy most of the time!) Moss Point, etc. etc....
Yep, we are hooked for sure!

It's bad to have two addictions. Since we got back into sailing the golf clubs are increasingly gathering dust. We used to travel all over and golf. Now between slip fees, payments, maintenance and new goodies the golf is slowly being replaced. Sailing was our first love and she is back with a vengeance. Hard to serve two masters.

It's true......... we used to have season passes and skied at least 2 weekends a month and loved it. One dry season and bought a boat the same year and we have not skied since! Golf??? we have not picked up clubs for those 5 years either!!!

After my divorce I took up golf and then by accident (hmm)I found my first sailboat and knew then that I found another addiction cause it was a few years away from owning a power boat and I got right back into it and the golf clubs stayed in the garage and never got used again.....I rather chase the wind than a little ball any day.
I work on both shores of Long Island and I'm always looking at the water/wind conditions and sail boats.

Bad.... had to laugh at your post! My wife and I spent our vacation last year traveling up and down the west coast of Washington State. We visited about 20-30 marinas. Never got tired of looking at boats since ours was on the hard in hibernation for the winter! This year we went down to Florida and every time we got near a marina or saw a sailboat out we were watching. Our non sailing friends think we are nuts!!! Maybe we are!!! LOL

I had a customer awhile back that said, "This is the first time I've hit golf balls in ten years. My clubs have just been sitting in the basement gathering dust." I asked him what made him suddenly decide to start playing again.

His reply, "I just sold my boat".

I inherited my first sailboat when my brother-in-law started playing golf full time. He said he didn't have time for both sports, and offered to give his O'Day 23 to my dad and me. That was 20 years ago, and I now own a Catalina 310. When she's on the hard, though, like she is now, I start to go into withdrawal by January. Fortunately, we live on Maui in the winter, so we still get to see a lot of sailboats. We even got to go for a sail on a friend's Corsair F24 recently. And next week, we'll be going on a whale watch on a charter 50' sailboat. So it looks like I'll survive the winter in good shape until I get my boat in the water.

Geez...

I'm trying to find a lake within a days drive of Columbus, OH that will be somewhere warm enough to sail and camp on the boat the last 2 weeks of March, when I have to get my vacation in (before the golf season starts.)

Maui? Withdrawal? 50' sailboat? I'm bleedin' green here.:D
