Hello all, I'm New member obviously. I hoping to get some input about oday 22s.

I'm currently looking at a 87 Catalina 22 (swing keel) which is about 2,00 miles from me, and there are 2 ODay 22's (1974 and ? ) for sale locally.

The C22 has a single axle refurbished trailer (without tongue extension), 2 yr old roller furling, 2 yr old 15hp 2 stroke outboard, 2 yr old jib, 1yr old keel hanging system, bimini, and looks in great shape. It should be around 6,000 CAD sitting in my driveway, if I pay asking price.

The Oday22 are these: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sailboat/winnipeg/oday-22-sailboat/1017309389?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true http://www.kijiji.ca/v-sailboat/win...ft/1050102547?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

I haven't seen the boats in person yet.

Whichever boat we buy, we hope to have it sitting at a marina on Lake Winnipeg most of the summer, (so we can being sailing within an hour or so of leaving the house) while at the same time be able to tow it with our pickup, to other places like the Lake of the Woods, Lake Superior, maybe even the B.C. Coast.

Anyone launched both boats ?
The Oday sits higher on the trailer so that makes it more of a problem but how much different is it in the real world ?

Any gotchas I should look at on the Oday 22 ? or the C22 for that matter ?

I notice threads about rotting deck cores. is this common to specific years ?
Just use a rubber mallet to tap the hull and see if it's rotten ?

Thanks for any advice.

I think both prices seem a bit high. The O'day looks to be very nice. I had a 1980 O22 that I trailered for the first season I owned it. It was on a single axle roller trailer without an extension. I was able to launch and retrieve with no problems. It depends on the ramps you would use.

When I was looking for a 22 I looked at both brands. I preferred the O22 for 2 reasons. The O'day has more freeboard which provides a little more cabin room. The idea of the swing keel Catalina concerned me due to the weight of the keel secured by a wire cable. The O22, 1980 and newer has a swinging centerboard within the weighted keel. The keel weight just enough to have negative buoyancy. I like that idea better. When I was much younger I had access to a Catalina 22. It seemed to sail nicely. One season the metal cable snapped twice. It had to be lifted out and repaired each time. The first incident was probably due to age. The 2nd was probably due to an inferior repair job.

Just personal preference. I'm sure you will have a lot of fun with either one.

Thanks Spooled !

What you've said is more or less what I've gathered.

While the cable did snap on the one for sale it was a salt water boat with the original steel cable. Evidently the kit that was used to repair it is updated and doesn't use normal steel. I have yet to fully investigate that claim.

The fact that the steel cable lasted at all gives me some confidence.
I'm wondering if simply using a industrial rust preventative/lubricant, combined with inspection and maintenance every time it's pulled from the water would solve any future risks of cable failure/jamming.

As to pricing, keep in mind that the Canadian dollar is currently taking a kicking.
Last summer it was at par with the USD.
2 weeks ago ebay was showing $4000 USD as $5,100 CAD, and that doesn't include the taxes bringing it over the border.

If I can get their price down to $4500 CAD, it's equal to $3200 USD + taxes.

The Catalina is 2,000 miles away, which means between $1000 to $2500 shipping depending on if I haul it myself (fuel and hotel and food) or hire someone via uShip.
That's why i'm considering those Oday 22, which are very close by.
That said, the C22 hasn't been sitting unused and has been updated/repaired over the last 2 years.

ugh.... decisions decisions.

Is deck rot a common issue with the late 70's O22 ?

As to having fun.... thats the problem with sailboats.. you forget the PITA times as soon as you get out on the water and have spray in your face. :D

The O22 I mentioned had a rock solid floor. I think it's a case by case basis. I'm not familier with the construction of the Catalina's but I would think its the same.

The odays are priced high unless they are in very good shape. I think the Catalina is a slightly better performing boat. All things being equal you would be happy with either. Given a choice between them in identical condition I would probably lean catalina, it has a vibrant online community even moreso than the oday, and I believe it is slightly more capable than the oday 22. If they were cars the catalina would be a sedan and the oday a station wagon. That being said the oday is more unique, solid, safe and I completely enjoy mine. Pick the one in the best condition of the three.

With regard to deck rot, the O'day does use balsa coring for decks. Where there is a penetration, they did not "pot" the hole with resin, so if the deck fitting bedding starts to leak, you can get water into the coring, and it can rot and delaminate. It's the luck of the draw. Given the age of the boat, you can expect to need to do some rebedding. Look for Main Sail's forum in The Featured Contributors section, and look at his home page, where he explains how to pot deck penetrations, and how to bed deck fittings using his Bed It Butyl tape.

The hull of O'days are not cored, the hull is solid glass.

Hi leawardrail,
Have you considered an Oday 23?
I have one of the nicest ones around, look at my profile there is an album with pictures.
The boat is a 1981 in incredibly good condition with a super trailer.
Check it out, I,m planning on selling her this summer due to health reasons.
PM me if you have any questions.
Cheers John

thanks for the great replies..

kpgraci: What's would you figure is an average price for an oday22 ? (keep in mind my comment in post#3) I'm I off in my calculations ?

I've heard similar comments about performance, from other people who have sailed both boats.
My big problem is there is not much of a selection of good trailerable sailboats locally. There are many bigger ones here, and dinghys, but not many decent trailerable keelboats. Getting one here adds to the cost, and starts bringing it above what others would pay elsewhere. I envy the lucky guys who live in places with more active sailing communities.

I'm also leaning towards the C22.

Brian S: Great info !

Maine Sail's thread on re-bedding will come in handy no matter which boat I end up with.

I won't have problems tackling that type of thing myself.
That said, I'm avoiding buying a project boat.

The eventual intended tow vehicle is currently still in the final stages of a frame off restoration. I'll be reroofing my house, and other minor stuff this summer. I don't need more big projects. I just wanna go sailing :)

I'll make sure I take a rubber mallet with me when we look at the boats.
Rebedding is fine. Fully rebuilding a deck core is nothing I want to get into, even if i got the boat for free. At a different time maybe... but not this summer. :)

Technodad: Nice looking boat. Is the 23 truely trailerable ? I have noticed some posts about the 23 but assumed it was to heavy. I'll have to do some web searching and see what I can learn.

I want to avoid marina dock bills and be able to use like an RV. My wife and I figure that instead of hauling a 16ft dinghy and camping, we would just get a bigger boat and camp in it.

BTW: The truck I eventually want to use to haul the boat, is a Dodge Dakota 4x4 3.9 V6 Convertible. Yes... a factory convertible truck... Top down.... wind in the hair... sailboat tailgating behind. :)

There's an oday 22 for sale in new york, without trailer for 2,000.
Sailnet's review page show and average price of $2,200 but who knows how that is calculated.

Is a realistic price for a good condition oday 22 with trailer, around $3,000 to $3500 USD?

Last year I sold my 1980 O22 for $3,400. It was in great shape, on a roller trailer. The motor was an older, 96 Evinrude 6hp 2 stroke.

You can view pics of it in my albums.

Hope that helps

Oday and Catalina O'Day 25 and Catalina 30 Milwaukee
Even with an exchange rate of $1 US to $1.26 CAN, $6k for an O'Day 22 seems high. I sold my 1985 O'Day 222 for just under $6k US (with a trailer) about 5 years ago and that is a step up from the 22. I thought I got a very good price even with a relatively newer motor, electric brakes, and numerous other upgrades.

Maybe Catalina's would be appropriate at a price of $6k CAN but older O'Day's should be discounted below that in my opinion. I've seen these sell for $3k to $3.5k US ($3.8-$4.4k CAN).

Technodad's point on the 23 is a good one. Those are more spacious boats but are still trailerable. I currently have an O'Day 25, and while it sits on a trailer, I setup once a year because it is a beast to launch. I could do the 222 myself. I need two people to safely get the mast up on the 25. Plus, with the diesel, fully loaded, it's in the range of 4000 lbs displacement vs. about 3000 for the 23 and 2200 for the 22 or 222. The 23 is a nice compromise between the 22 and the 25 in my opinion.

Check the chainplates and check for soft spots near the chainplates and near the mast step. Those are places where leaking is common which softens the core.

Good luck.

Example of O'Day 23

While there are currently no 23's on this site (I sold my 222 in two weeks when I posted it on the OdayOwners site a few years ago), the following listing is on the local Craigslist for a 23. I'm not suggesting its a choice for you, but it is an indication of current market listings available.

A 15 HP motor is way too big for a 22 foot boat. I had a 9.9 on a 25 Catalina and ended up replacing it with a 8 HP and that was fine. Too big a motor will have you running at low RPM's all the time and puts too much weight way in back of the transom increasing your pitching and stressing the transom mounting bracket. I have heard of people having to beef up their transoms due to flexing and insufficient thickness for the weight of the motor. Plus the new 4 strokes are heavier than the old 2 strokes.

I'm about to donate at 1974 23 O'day. The trailer is a single axle fine for local but one would need high load tires to move it any real distance .
I used it for a practice boat. Needs cushions down below. Contact me if you want it. It will go cheap if I sell it.

Thanks for the responses everyone !

I haven't purchased a boat yet but I have a surveyor looking at the Catalina 22 this weekend. If I purchase the boat, I will likely be selling the 15hp 2 stroke, and finding a smaller 4 stroke. Less noise, less pollution, no fuel mixing.

It's too bad the C22 doesn't have the table that folds down from the bulkhead, like the Oday 23 has. It's a much better configuration IMO. I've seen it on larger boats and it makes more sense.

The Oday 23 looks like a great boat, unfortunately all the photos I've seen of them on trailers, show them sitting much higher than the O22 and C22.
For the type of launches I'll probably be using, that's not a good thing.

The other issues with the O23 for me are:
-longer lenght makes it unlikely it will fit in my backyard without ripping out fences and terra forming a bit.
-The extra weight. The C22+trailer+gear sit as around 3,400 lbs, and from what I have seen the ODay 23 is around 4,100 lbs. That will be pushing the limit with my 3.9 v6 Dakota that I hope to be using as a main tow vehicle.

It's too bad really, Wisconsin is a much shorter distance away to go a boat. In fact I hope to be heading to WI to do some sailing with whichever boat I purchase.

Catalina 22? Booooo!

Naw, just kidding! :D

There's a reason there are more than 14,000 Cat 22s made, it's a great boat for a lot of folks. :D

LOL

Agreed. One reason I chose one over the Oday22, was that the swing keel drops the weight lower and from what I've been told, it can handle stronger winds and sails a bit better than a Oday 22.
As a bonus, this specific trailer has a curved frame so that the boat sits as low as possible, along with an axle with a 4" drop.

The Oay 23 was very tempting. It would have been nicer to spend time aboard, especially with the table configuration, but for where I plan to tow the boat, and what I'm towing with, I figure they'd be impractical for my needs.
