after having my engine rebuilt it ran for 2 hours and quite. the mechanic claims that contaminated fuel caused incomplete combustion; an accumulation of raw fuel in the cylinder which caused the connecting rod to bend. Is this pssible or is it a snow job?

Who knows, but you cannot compress a liquid.

Rob: I do not know if he is pullin' you leg or not, but you cannot compress a liquid. So if you had enough fuel in a cylinder I suppose that it would be possible. I think that this isn't uncommon when you blow a head gasket. My question is who's fault is it? Yours for not combusting the fuel or his for not rebuilding it correctly?

Tough one

This is a tough (and technical) question. I would think that Yanmar would be your more definitive answer in a situation like this. They are the experts. And it would give you more fire-power when you bring the answer back to your mechanic.

If my engine ran two hours and blew,

My mechanic whould repair it! thats all there is to it. It seems to me that unburnt fuel would push thru and not create a compression problem, Call a yanmar dealer and talk to them.

may help

i have a 7.3 Int. diesel in my truck, and had bad fuel when i bought. the mechanic told me that on a diesel the black smoke is unburnt fuel in the exhaust. the contaminated fuel should have passed through the systme and out the muffler. On the other side, should the mechanic startup the new motor and ensure its proper operation? it was his job to rebuild it properly and if it was not burning fuel properly he should have caught it.

Blown Head Gasket?

Could the head gasket have blown filling the cylinder with water and bending the rod? That seems like and aweful lot of fuel to go in there from a stuck or leaking injector. As far as contaminated fuel goes, shouldn't it have quit running before the bad fuel accumulated enough to bend the rod? I know on a gas engine if a head gasket is blown the top of the piston will look like a light brown on top of the piston. Not black like alot of them I've seen. I know too much fuel would probably clean the piston and would not have any carbon on top.

YSE

I've done just about everything to my YSE over the last 10 years. I would say the only way you could blow a head gasket is to not use the proper torque on the head bolts or over heat the engine. If you repair it yourself (very easy, 1 hour max) torque the head bolts to 90 lbs. Sean

In regards to yanmarhelp.com

Please read the site carefuly. It is NOT a web site designed or published by Yanmar Diesel Engine, Japan or Yanmar North America. www.yanmarhelp.com is a web site published by a Yanmar dealer in the UK. Although it is full of great basic information.

snow job

Hello, In think you are being snowed. When the engine is running, the temperature inside the combustion chamber is over 1000 degrees F. Any liquid is instantly vaporized. Contaminated fuel will result in increased emmissions because it won't burn, but as long as the engine is running there won't be any liquid in the cylinder. If the engine never ran, and you tried starting it when raw fuel or water was in the combustion chamber, that could cause the problem your mechanic described. However, when the engine is running it's way too hot for liquid to be in the cylinder. good luck, Barry
