My 3QM has a bad starter solenoid. Yanmar calls it a magnetic switch. I have found a replacement for $220 which seems awfully high to me. I am looking for those of you who have ordered similar Yanmar parts. Is this the going rate?

Are you sure it's a bad solenoid? If you don't have full voltage from the control panel, your small voltage loss might be the issue. A simple, cheap relay might solve the problem.

I am sure it is the solonoid. Replaced the wire with 10 g from the start switch. Tap on the solonoid with a wrench and it works. Otherwise no.

Try a 16 gauge wire directly from the battery to the solenoid. If it works fine, let me know. It may not be the gauge. I also just replaced a 19 year old key switch.

For $220 you should be able to get a rebuilt, if not new starter. Personally, I'd take it to a starter and alternator rebuild shop in your area and have them check it out. If it is the solenoid, I'm guessing they can replace it for under $40.00 all in.

What Capta says. A good reputable rebuild shop is worth its weight gold. You can tell a reputable shop from the size of component piles vs size of piles of whole parts. Also his bench will have a good drive system with old crusty knife switches and fifty yr old 10” analog Weston parallax corrected volt and ammeters. I told my guy i want his bench when he hangs it up..

Over a year ago had same problem with solenoid on Yanmar diesel in my generator. Replaced with Chinese made starter from Amazon, around $65.00 with shipping. So far works perfectly.

A quick email to this vendor should confirm if this will do the trick. The 3QM parts manual agrees with the Yanamr p/n in the link. Maybe worth a try for the price of the ticket.

I wired the Relay (found on this forum) because of starter issues on my Hunter 376 (Yanmar 3JH). No issues since..
good luck. Bob

+1 on finding a good rebuild shop. I had my Yanmar starter rebuilt last winter (due to a bendix problem...would spin but not engage at times). I think it cost me $130, and they also put on a new solenoid. I'd rather have the Yanmar unit fixed than go for a cheap starter online. $220 doesn't surprise me at all for a Yanmar solenoid. Yanmar parts are getting pretty pricey. FWIW, I also added the relay for the start switch wire.

Not surprised at the Yanmar cost. Find a generic replacement or find the tractor equivalent part. Capta's advise is on point, take it to a starter/alternator shop and they will find one and refurbish the starter for under $100.

Thanks for taking the time to send me this link. Today I found out that the part Yanmar matches with the 3QM is not the same as the solonoid I pulled. The yoke attached to the solonoid's cylinder is T shaped, not slotted like the one in this link.
